How have you faired with this aftermarket cooler vs the standard stock cooler from eVGA (or basically any other maker)? I am getting 420mhz core and 1100mhz RAM. Would I see much better results from an NV Silencer or is it just quieter?

in my experiences, it's just quieter, but it actually makes it worthwhile for me... the fan is literally pretty much inaudible, but the cooling is not far off what stock cooling had to offer.
I like the looks of the cooler though, and the fact it's easy to isntall, and is very quiet. overall I'd still say it's worthwhile though.

I installed mine on a BFG 6800GT three days ago. My idle temps are actually three degrees higher with the NV5 silencer. It was still worth it for me because I want my PC to run quietly. The fan on the video card was starting to drive me insane. Now along with Cool n' Quiet my PC is nearly inaudible. hehehe

Isn't the slot below your video card left open, allowing the hot air from the silencer to blow out of your case? I guess I just think it's weird that your card would be hotter with the silencer installed.

You sure you installed it right? The NV5 should drop it a few degrees than stock. Maybe you didnt apply enough thermal paste on the gpu to make good contact with the cooler, or something might be in the way of the cooler.

I had the same bland results, about the same temps for me... but again, worth it because it's SO quiet.

Mine dropped idle temps 9-10 C compared to stock, and it's extremely quiet so I'm happy.

I've been reading about peoples' 6800gt temps, and it seems as though mine is a lot cooler than everyone elses. My card idles at 46 degress celcius, and under max load reaches maybe 51 or so. Either my temp probe is wrong, or my case has excellent cooling (antec super lanboy, 120mm fan in, 120 mm fan out, dual fan psu sucking hot air up and out of case). Even overclocked to 400/1100 and after playing Doom 3 at high settings, it only got up to 56 degrees.

I've got a chaintech 6800gt by the way, the fan is easily the loudest part of my system. Without the vid card installed when I was building it, the thing was damn near silent.

did everyone use the thermal paste that came with it...or AS5? And how much did they use? I've seen some reviews that claim very good results (5-10 degrees lower), and one review claim no difference, and one claim worse temps.

Which is better to use ? Artic Silver5 or the compound that comes w/ the NV Silencer ?

Arctic Silver 5 will be better, of course. However, I used the compound that came with the silencer as it is silicon and is not conductive like arctic silver is.

Thanks Cobraxt,

What about AS Ceramique ? I think it's non conductive..

Yeah, that should be fine. I don't trust myself with AS5 (especially not on a $400 card) so I settle for the non-conductive stuff.

how are you checking your temps while playing Doom3?

I used AS5 on the core and the white paste on the RAM. It's pretty easy not to come in contact with anything that might damage the core wen applying AS5, but the RAM is a different story... It has been a while since I tested the temps with the stock cooler, but IIRC my temps dropped around 5C when running rthdribl after installing the NV5.

Will the NV silencer fit in my small form factor Shuttle computer?

I don't think it will. The fan sticks out about an inch in front of the card lengthwise, and takes up 2 (yes, two) PCI slots.

I didn't use Arctic Silver 5. I used the paste that was packaged with the NV5 Silencer.

you can run a 6800GT with a PS like that if there is not much else in the system.

I just thought of something. I used Arctic Silver 5 on the ramchips when I was using my NV Silencer rev5. Shortly after, a couple days later, I did get the error screen after windows loaded. Shortly after with my watercooling setup, I had horrible corruption with the card.

Assuming I did a decent job applying the AS5 to the ramchips can that cause electrical interference just being on the top of the chip????

well if u put it on the plastic upper layer of the chips where it belongs... the conductiveness shouldn't be an issue :).
