6800GT or X800XL/X850XL

welcome to the forums! well between those two obviously the x800XL is a better buy. u can get a GT nowadays for a lot lot cheaper than that. but since ur goin for PCI-e i would say go for the x800XL since it is not possible to find any PCI-e 6800GTs for under $300

Welcome to the forums

First off, there's no such thing as an X850XL.

Between those two cards, i agree with ddogg; the x800xlo is by far the better buy. It'll perform nearly as well in almost every game, but it has a slightly older feature set. However, I still think its worth it if its $130 less; even if its $70 less I'd say its worth it to get the X800XL over the 6800gt, but thats just my opinion.

you'll be very happy with either but th x800xl is massively better value in PCI-E than the 6800GT

Yeah, what the hell is an X850XL? 😛 Either the X800XL or a 6800GT is fine, as they are both excellent cards.

oh, ok, i was looking around and i was so sure of getting the x800xl, since i dont get paid a whole lot , and it did seem like a very good buy for the price and performance, thx for confirming it, im building a A64 winny comp and thats whats going in it.(unless the 6800gt drops even lower than the x800)

If you can wait with buying a new videocard then that's what i would do, definitly if you're on a budget. The next generation of cards is going to be introduced in less then a month. So if you wait you can buy a card from the next series or buy a x800/x850 but for a lot less because prices are going to fall rapidly.

In theory, yes. However, there are a few things to consider:

- Even if the next gen cards are launched in a month (remember, this is still only a rumor) it will take them at least another month to show up in retail.
- The launch of the next gen will have the largest impact in the really high end cards. The XL is already quite aggressively priced, so I doubt that it will drop significantly right away nor do I think that there will be a next gen card with better performance in the XL's price range for at least a few months.

yeah, dont worry yourself over a "paper launch" it will be a while until 6800GT's and x800XL's drop much in price...get it now, enjoy it!

yeah, i kinda figured that, since its so low as it is, from when it first came out, a few months ago when i was in korea(army), the 6800gt was the best buy, now 6months later, the x800xl is the best one. go figure what half a year will do to prices. oh and btw, i love that link you got pray, funny as hell, i was launing my ass off.

question, should i swap out the stock hs/f and go for one of the arctic cooling units for this card?

I wouldn't. Unless you are want a quieter cooler. For overclocking, on X800XL it's probably not worth it since they are not good overclocking cards. For 6800GT, it's probably more worth it for reduced noise since they usually get to ultra speeds anyways. If you do, i'd probably get Zalman VF-700ALCU.

yeah its more a noise issue with me, i want my comp as quiet as it can get, thats why im going for a thermalright cpu cooler, and i got a lanli pc1000 case, i like silent yet well cooled computers. i know its almost impossible to make a comp that way, but i got a barton 3200 running in the low/mid 40's idle and high 40's/ low 50' load, and i cant hear it over my fan in my window. when im sleeping, all you can hear is the wind passing through it.

yeah, maybe down the road(half year or so that is), but im looking for more quiet solutions that cool better than the stock cooler, any ideas on it?

The Arcitc Cooler is silent.

6800gt. yes, now there is a x850 something, and its definetly better than any card out there. buts is so ezxpensive! nvidia hasn't come out with its competitor to it yet. and get artic cooler so u can oc the 6800 gt to beyond utlra speeds.
