6800GT issues

Today I replaced my defective Chaintech 6600GT with an EVGA 6800GT and all of a sudden my computer is running like a paraplegic.

Video Card Performance

This morning, I opened up my case and took out the old 6600GT without uninstalling the drivers. I was in a rush but it was the last day that I could RMA it. I wasn't expecting my 6800GT to come today but UPS ended up dropping it off this afternoon.
I installed the card, uninstalled the old drivers (nvidia 76.41) and replaced them with XG 76.50 drivers. I ran some benchmarks just to make sure everything was kosher but the results were a bit disturbing.

I scored ~4100 in 3dmark05 which is around 1000 points lower than the average 6800GT. When I set it to 1280x1024 w/ 4xAA and 8xAF, I scored in the 2000's, less than comparable configs at 1600x1200.

What could the problem be? Do you think it's the new drivers? I'm going to revert back to my old ones and test again.

Video Card Overclocking

My 6800GT won't overclock well at all either. It runs fine when I "detect optimal settings" (375/1040) in the nvidia menu but when I try to do it manually, it gives me this:

Most people can easily get over 400 but I'm getting stuck at 375. It just won't let me set it any higher. Is there any way to ignore it and force the clocks over or should I just listen and simmer down? Idle and load temps are 50° and ~73°.

It allows me to set my memory to 1100 though. There's no issue there. What's the worst that could happen with this? Just artifacting? If so, I won't worry.

i had the same problem and what i did was keep the memory timings to stock and upped the core i did not use the auto detect, what i did was just up the timings and hit test and whamo it worked fine and i can get the core to 410 with no troubles at all. i havent gone any higher yet, but the point is that is what i did and it worked.

Tragedy... your card wont run faster than you payed. Yes, i would be upset as well befcause it kind of takes some fun factor out, however, you still got more than your moneys worth.

Once again, 3dMark scores mean nothing. The scores are so scewed these days they give nothing but a general idea of how everything will work. If you want real, accurate results then play some games and see if they feel any better.

How will I know if it has done any "permanent damage"?

ps. Congrats, you just scared me out of ever O/Cing my card. =(

Do like most others. Set it to 10 x7 , high performance and you'll score about 5K (Don't actually need to change your res, I think 3Dmark05 defaults to that anyway. Just put the cards settings to performance.

IMHO, benchies are just a useful tool to let you know you've got things setup right. If you don't, it either won't run the bench or you'll get a real LOW score. Not just 10-20% lower. I've seen a driver change bring me 10% on a benchie. Whether that's the case in actual gaming is another matter altogether.

"Real world" performance beats theory/benchies hands down. Load up Doom 3, enable the FSP counter in the console command and let her rip. Now that'll tell you something useful.

Exactly. My 6600GT scored 3900 and my 6800GT is scoring 4300.
