I should first say I am NOT 100% certain about this pick, but I would choose the X850. The X850 is almost as fast as a 7800GT in many benches and is now available for less than $160. That is a great deal, and one that is difficult if not impossible to pass up unless you can afford the $300 for a 7900GT or X1800XT.

7600GT = 6800Ultra < X850XT PE

So 7600GT is slower than X850XT PE by a little, but uses much less power, will run cooler, and has SM3.

Out of these, I like 7600 gt, but for my budget I grabed a 128mb x800 for $72 :)

You should get the 7900 GT then as it consumes less power then the 6800 GS as evidenced by the power graphs here at Anandtech.

That would be a 7600GT. Not a 7900GT.

Look at the max power draw chart the 7900 GT does consume less power then a 6800GS.

Oh. I was looking at the idle chart, not the load chart.

Thanks for that review link. I was a little confused on how to read their charts...I take it that when the compare a 6800GS to 850XT PE, the RED NEGATIVE percentages means that the 850XT PE is out performing the GS?

Also, that is the Platinum Edition which by my research means a +20mhz CPU, +80MHZ Memory. That doesn't seem like a lot.

The X850XT is the fastest of the bunch, and is the most overclockable. When overclocked to 600 core/600+ RAM it is faster than a stock 7800GT, which is faster than a 7600GT. Stock for stock, the performance is about the same between the 7600GT and X850, but when OC'd I believe the X850 is definitely the best of the bunch. When a site tried to OC an eVGA 7600GT CO SE superclock they could not get more than 619 mhz on the core, which is only a 19 mhz OC since the OC'd card runs at 600 stock. That's a good indication that other 7600GTs (which run around 560-580 core) won't OC very high above factory speeds. The X850XT is known for its high overclockability due to its very nice dual slot cooler. Speeds well in excess of X850XT PE levels are not hard

If you don't plan to OC, then get the 7600GT. It's stock speed rivals that of the ATi card, but it uses much less power, is much quieter, and has SM3 support (which is kind of a trivial consideration, since not that many games use SM3 right now and games that do in the future may be too advanced for a 7600GT to handle at higher qualities)

Im waiting to see if ATI can supply enough X1800GTO's for a good price by April, otherwise im getting a 7600GT

I have seen in many websites that the 7600GT is faster than the 6800GS, and the X850XT PE runs at par or faster than the 7800GS and is not far behind from the 7800GT, so I'm pretty sure that the X850XT PE is faster than the 7600GT, and even faster if you overclock it. Backed up by the ATi's superior image quality (The lack of SM 3.0 is not important since it is just about performance and ATi can run SM 2.0b faster than nVidia can do with it's 3.0 on the NV40 series. Both cards have HDR, except the nVidia uses FP 16 and ATis X8X0 uses Int16. Most users turns it off due to it's overbright effect that can be bothersome quite often

someone tell me how the hell a 7600gt can beat a x850 if its running at 128 bit and 12 pipes???

im not the only one lost i hope

7600gt > x850

It draws less power, is likely quieter and cooler, has shader model 3 (why wouldnt you want it now?) and its just a good bit faster...and likely cheaper.

As far as cheaper, an X850XT new on Newegg right now costs $164...that's a good bit less than a 7600GT.

As for power and noise, a 7600 GT does better on both counts, making it ideal for someone who doesn't OC
SM3 is kinda trivial right now (read page 2)

However, a 7600GT (esp. an already OC?d eVGA, BFG, etc) will hit its OCing wall right quick (read page 2 in thread), while an X850XT can easily go past X850XT PE speeds, which in itself is nearly 7800GT speeds. Now, 7800GT>7600GT, so IMHO a X850XT is the better card for some1 who places more emphasis on speed than quietness, etc

ATi cards also have better picture quality than nVidia

The 7600 GT is probably at least the equal of the 6800 Ultra if not more, X850 XT PE is also really expensive, were talking about a vanilla X850 XT, also the Shader Model 3.0 is more an issue now as more games adopt this feature, Age of Empires 3 is one where it improves image quality. Were also talking about G7x Shader Technology not NV4x, so it's quite improved. Also no devloper I know of has adopted the ATI way of doing HDR, unless ATI goes and does it itself, so it's basically useless in comparison to the OpenEXR Format.

More efficient architecture, high core speeds, etc . . .

finally a thread worth reading...

I've been putting off getting a new card till this debate is solved.

LetsGetSilly, what power supply do you have?

I've been hesitant of the X850XT because of power resources demanded of my stock 350watt power supply.

and no...i'm not going to upgrade my power supply.

nor will I spent 300 bucks on a 7800GT

some people have too much money to blow on games...
