6800GS vs 6800GT

I see GS'es generally OC'ing past 500 on the core, and GT's hitting over 420 on the core.

I can get for my friend a $200 GS new or a $180 GT used. Which one would be a better choice? Which one is a better card? Not much of a difference in the real world anyway right?

I might just get an x800gto 16p, but UT2k7 = SM3.0.

Opinions?

Taking all things into account the GT is slightly better then the GS. If it were me, I would think of it as you are looking at two identical boards and were deciding between new and used for a $20 difference.

6800gs PCI express

for $200ish or X850XT AGP for $250 but don't buy the 6800GS AGP its totally crap for its price

Are we talkig AGP or PCI-E upgrade? The 6800GS is a better PCI-E card, but nothing to get excited about if you're talking AGP.

Taken directly from Anandtech's review (which you might just want to read for yourself......after all, it will answer your question):

Today sees the introduction of a part that performs just as well as the 6800 GT but costs about $70 to $80 less. The 6800 GS looks like it hits the sweet spot between price and performance this holiday season. Aside from cutting the cost of the 6800 GT, the 6800 GS doesn't cost that much more than a vanilla 6800 with 256MB of RAM. As the vanilla 6800 performs just slightly better than the 6600 GT, we can say with confidence that the 6800 GS has taken over the 6800 line and is the only real option left of the bunch.

I'm talking about the PCI-E cards. I can get a 6800GT used locally for about $180, or a 6800GS new + shipping for about $210 after shipping.

If both are OC'ed, which one will be faster? And 3DMark05 is biased for the GS, right? I see 6.3k vs 5.5k.

Gigabyte PCIe 6800GS $189 @ newegg

The GT will be faster [probably depending on O/C - especially with AA/AF- However, the GS may O/C higher] but then you have NO warrannty - esp if you are o/cing . . .
ME? . . . i'd get the GS [i WILL get the GS, if nothing nicer in AGP shows up]

GS for sure, it's high clocks make up for the lack of 4 pipes, not to many GT's can reach past 450/1150, read some GS's do 500+/1200+

PS. i scored 6000 on 3DMark05 with my 6800gt agp

PS. i scored 6000 on 3DMark05 with my 6800gt agp

The 6800GT has 33% more pipelines and 20% more vertex processors so it doesn't have to OC as high. (four more pipelines and one more vertex processor)

E.G. A 25MHz OC on a 6800GT gives it the SAME PIXEL FILLRATE as a 500MHz GS?

16X375= 6000
12X500=6000

Anyway, OCing is always HIGHLY YMMV, and these cards are fairly close in spec:

those guys who post the 6600GT is faster than a 6800NU because it's at 500MHz! (ignoring that it has less pipelines, memory bandwidth and VPs)

There's lots of folks who lose focus and become obsessed with the all-mighty MHz. That's like saying a 3.0GHz P4 is faster then a 2.9GHz A64 (it's not).

If money is no object, and you're ONLY comparing the GS with the GT (no other cards), then the GT is the better card of the two.

VALUE-WISE, the GS is the smarter buy, as it's a much better bang-for-buck card, but the GT is still the faster of the two (although by a small margin... especially PCI-E). The PCI-E GS is an excellent value hands-down (though one must question the AGP GS, but that's another story).

Ok, well like I said, I can get a used 6800GT for $180, or a new GS. I'd rather get a used GS, but can't find one.

i agree with that, and at stock speeds there pretty much equal, but at a price of $200 or less the 6800gs is the better buy, and yes i agree ocing varies from card to card, but 6800gs tends to be pretty good at that, another 6800gs 515/1200

That would make sense if they're nV41 chips like my old 6800NU SLI, those things in general show very good OC potential.

I just got a ASUS Extreme 6800GT PCI-E to replace my RMA BFG 6800GS OG AGP. I score 400pts less than with my previous GS AGP and i'm a little upset about it.

The GS (AGP) is: 370/1050, 12pp/5vp (BFG OCed) = 5276 (3Dmark05)
The GT (PCI-E) is: 350/1000, 16pp/6vp = 4875 (3Dmark05)

The only difference is the GS was on a ASUS A8V and the GT is on a ASRock 939Dual-SATA2.
