Howdy folks, first time poster here.

Ok, I know lot's of people suggest saving some dough and oc'ing the GT to achieve Ultra + speeds.

So here's the thing. I'm getting a 3500+ and MSI K8N NEO2 soon (I hope JBT doesn't read this :)), and really want to put everything together in my short break between summer school and the fall semester.

I've been searching like a lot of people for the BFG GT OC, and have found lots of overpriced pre-order/back order, etc.

Any reason I shouldn't just spend the extra hundred bucks to get the EVGA Ultra? Then I can just run the thing at stock speeds (or as fast as an oc'd GT) until I'm comfortable with the idea of oc'ing (i'm a total newbie when it comes to building/overclocking, but avid gamer for years).

Perhaps there isn't as much advantage to overclocking the Ultra as there is to the GT?

Aside from the extra $, which isn't too big a deal, is there any other reason not to go Ultra?

Thanks for your thoughts.

If the cost isn't too big of a deal I would just go with the ultra. Then when you get more comfortable with OCing you can see how high you can get the ultra. Just make sure you don't skimp on the power supply.

Well, I had decided to go with an Ultra. I was deadset on it. But now after losing out on several deals and with an order still with Gateway for an X800XT PE, I just got tired of waiting. With Doom 3 in my hands tomorrow, I convinced myself to just go ahead and order a GT. I have to say that I'm sure I will not regret it.

You will have as much trouble trying to get an Ultra as you will a BFG GT, at least you will with the way things have played out thus far.

I went with the Gainward Golden Sample 6800 GT. It comes with an all copper cooling solution and two fans. It should be here Friday. Here's the link, it is still in stock as of writing this, so you might check it out. Oh, and it was $428 2nd day Fed-Ex shipped. Gainward Golden Sample 6800GT @ excaliberpc.com

The cooling with this card and the ease of use of coolbits should make OC'ing pretty easy for you. It really is easier than you think, and if you need any help you can get a lot here. I would say save the money now and spend it on games or more RAM.
