6800 Ultra vs GT Opinions

All,

For a system with a P4 3.0, would there be much of a difference between the 6800 Ultra and GT? I am thinking 1280x1024 resolution with 4xAA and 4xAF.

Regards,

Rick

Not much difference at all the GT's pretty much can get to Ultra speed anyways. With a that "slow" of a CPU you probably wouldn't notice anyways.

I don't mean your CPU is slow by any means it's just that these new cards are pretty CPU hungry.

Now I have to wonder what a 2.2 gig axpm is going to be able to do

That's what I was thinking, but I now have both flavors of cards from BFG (both OC'd from the factory) and need to send one back... and there is a $150 price difference between them from what I have paid. I didn't think I would see $150 difference worth of performance, but I thought I was check with you guys here.

Where did you buy those cards? Everywhere I look, the retailer will only exchange for the same card and or a $75.00 (15%) restocking fee plus postage.

You are better off selling to one of the guys on the forum.

Yup, I have both the BFG 6800 GT and the Ultra in my house right now. The GT is installed in my machine (I received that one last week from CompuPlus) and my Best Buy pre-order just arrived today for the BFG Ultra. It's still in the shrink wrap.

I planned to just take the Ultra down to BB and return it but I want to make sure I won't regret doing so in favor of the GT. So far, most people recommend keeping the GT for my rig since it's a P4 3.0 and from what I am seeing in the benchmarks, there doesn't seem to be $150 worth of difference between the cards.

Thus far, I am very happy with the GT and have not experienced a single glitch. I kinda feel like I should leave well enough alone I suppose. Also, I won't overclock the cards beyond what BFG has already done. I am not brave enough to risk such expensive hardware, even if it's minimal risk.

I just want to make sure I am thinking ahead and considering everything before I do.

I definately realize that I am fortunate that two pre-orders came but it's kinda agonizing to choose between the two!

Oh, and neither store has a restocking fee within 30 days.

You are one lucky motha...boy shut your mouth! 🙂 Considering I just got my online order for a 6800GT backordered by Best Buy, I am somewhat envious but glad for you. Whichever return gains you the most loot back I would go for. You can probably OC the GT to Ultra levels as someone else had mentioned. They're pretty much the same architecture AFAIK, just lower speeds and probably different memory chips. Have fun.

I was thinking of picking up a GT to replace my 9600 Pro at the end of August. Looking at screenshots of EQ2 and WoW are making me drool.

Other there any reviews that showcase a 6800, the Ultra and the GT, compared to the X800 lineup?

I have not installed the Ultra, but the GT is quieter than my 9800XT was. It's a different noise actually. You could hear the fan on the 9800XT but you hear the air with the 6800GT. Either way, I am picky about noise and this is plenty quiet in 2D and 3D.

For what reason other than because it's top of the line should I keep the ultra? Right now I am seeing very small fps differences between the ultra and the GT, so for now I am convinced the GT is the best bang for the buck, but I am wondering if there might be a significant advantage to the Ultra when later titles like Doom 3 and HL2 come out.

Any thoughts there?

i have a bfg OC 6800GT running nice and satable at 380-1100 on an xp2500 OC'ed to a 3200(daily overclock for over a year now)

i ran 3dm03 earlier and just got finished playing far cry(1280x960 everything maxed and 4xAF) for almost 4 hours, if that tells you anything

😀

With a P4 at 3.0 you're better off with the GT and save some money. GT is also overclockable so your CPU becomes a bottleneck.
Your GT can only render graphics on your screen as much as the CPU gives the details to the gfx card. That's why for accurate benchies for these high-end cards you really have to look at what people use for their test bed. Most of them do use overclocked CPU's so that the cpu bottleneck will not factor in.

Now all you have to do is overclock your 3.0 to 3.4/3.5 speeds and you'd be enjoying your GT with stock speeds for a good 2 years worth of gaming 🙂

Is that as high as you could take the core? Or were you satisfied with 380 core and didn't want to push it further?

I am not an overclocker, so I would be leaving my cards at stock speed, which for the BFG is slightly overclocked from the factory. My Intel motherboard won't let me overclock my CPU either. Having said that, am I still CPU limited with the GT or would I have to go to the Ultra to be CPU limited?

Theoretically, your system will become CPU-limited because your gfx is waiting to render details.

At 3Ghz though, you will enjoy the graphics and not have to worry about your frame rates dropping so you're better off sticking with the GT and save the $100.

Heck, I doubt anybody here can tell the difference with fraps average of 70 versus 90 when what is perceptible by the human eye is when fraps would dip below 25.
