6800 ultra has better iq than x800 pro article at digit-life

What sort of details have been released about the R500? Is it going to be another massive leap, or this generation's 2nd release card? (ie R500 is to X800XT as 9800 is to 9700). Or simply a R420 with SM3.0 support?

Regardless, I doubt it will be released until this time next year.

Very little info. It is supposed to be an entirely new card, supporting SM3.0 and possibly even DX10 (although I find that unlikely unless MS gets the spec finished VERY soon and it's not radically different than DX9).

The R480 is, AFAIK, the refresh part for the R420/R423, although there hasn't been much info on that either.

Edit: I have heard rumors that R480 may support SM3.0(!), but nothing more than that. It may be out around Christmas...

They are also saying nvidia will soon give a 30% boost in performance with their latest drivers. Those MAGIC drivers have been promised for the past two years and have not seen the light of day.

umm i dont think anyone has actually said that the new drivers are gonna bring a 30% increase (unless some fanboi has in which case im sorry).. the statement originally made about anything being 30% was the inquirer stating that the 6800 had a possible 30% more performance to give... nothing to do with the next drivers giving it a 30% performance gain....

Yet again you flame me for spending money I earned honestly on legal products.
I'm not flaming you for buying products, I'm flaming you for being a ridiculous troll.

Is there anyone else who finds this totally bizarre?
I think they'd find your 9700P -> 5800U -> 9800P -> 5800U -> 9800U upgrade path far more bizarre especially when you then start complaining that you feel the X800XT is a rip-off because it adds "nothing new".

I never said ATI was ripping me off,
Yes you did. You explained to me that because ATi "only" doubled the amount of pipes in the XT you felt ripped off. Yet before you had even finished that sentence you were off to buy a third leaf-blower to replace your 9800P.

If nVidia released a card this year that was an nV35 with twice the pipes, you would jump down their throat feet first and flame them all day long.
So now you're telling me what I'd do? I really can't see how that's possible for you to do so given you don't seem to follow the actions or reasoning of a normal person.

Ironically what you accuse me of potentially doing is exactly what you've already done - three times in fact. So not only are you a troll but you're also an unbelievable hypocrite.

BFG, I don't think anyone finds the fact that I buy more video cards than the average person bizarre except you.
Most people realize I live in a free country and can spend my money however I want to? (I can posts links to many saying they would like to play around with 5800s as well?)

As for me being a troll, you're entitled to your opinion, but you don't see me posting "ATI or nVidia?" threads.

Some of that review is just stupid.

In part 2 they show some dithering on the ATI cards. And then go on to rank the 6800 as best for Trilinear. Why? Why did xbit rank the 6800 first? Because of the dithering? The dithering is a complete non-issue in games --proven fact. You have to blow up the mipmaps a lot to see it. As far as gaming goes for Trilinear the 9800 = 6800 = X800(?). The only question is how good ATI?s X800 Trylinear is in gaming --and they didn?t address that issue. I would think that since they?re reviewing graphic cards for gaming, they would tell us why they ranked the cards the way they did and how this affects gaming. It?s just a virtually irrelevant Trilinear lab test unless they do.

Part2 is about AF. The 6800 has slightly less angle dependent AF in the lab. In practical terms it?s virtually meaningless in gaming. When looking at some of their shots I disagree with some rankings.

2003 ATI fan: Damn nVidia and their Brilinear!
2004 ATI Fan: Brilinear is teh roxor! ATI did it right!

2003 ATI fan: You need DX9b PS2 whether there are games that use it or not!
2004 ATI fan: Who needs DX9c SM3?! No games use it!

2003 ATI fan: Damn nVidia and their cheater drivers that don't even tell me they're not full trilinear, an absolute necessity!
2004 ATI fan: ATI in their wisdom has chosen not to implement full trilinear, and they didn't tell us because it was none of our business!

2003 ATI fan: ATI IQ is the top of the heap!
2004 ATI fan: 3rd is good enough for us, as long as it's faster!

2002 ATI fan: The nV30 is just a souped up GF4!
2003 ATI fan: We're lucky the 9800 is more of the same, but faster!
2004 ATI fan: Yep. Status quo. X800 more of the same, but faster!

LOL

well, as shown in a previous thread, the same can be done for the nv fan 😛

as far as the IQ degredation, yes, it's pretty apparent in many areas of one game (and no, it's not the CP settings, i did say that somewhere), but only noticeable in specific, limited areas on other games.

if you own and use an x800, overall there's very little to grip about, but i'm just trying to be fair and comment on the shortcomings that ARE there, rather than overlooking them... what r420 IS is a good card, what it IS NOT is a perfect one.

hopefully i'll have an nv40 next week, and you can be sure i will praise it's strengths as well as it's shortcomings when compared directly to the r420 (just as i stated there were things to like about the nv35 last gen, despite it's shortcomings). there's no reason to play favorites; i enjoy toying with hardware from both sides, but my self-worth certainly is not based on green or red 😉

edit oh.. heh.. guess oldfart already showed this 🙂

2003 nVidia fan: nVidia optimizations are not cheating
2004 nVidia fan: Damn ATi for their cheating optimizations

2003 nVidia fan: Brilinear looks fine
2004 nVidia fan: ATi Trylinear sux (and confuses it with Brilinear)

2003 nVidia fan: PS 2.0 doesn't matter. No current games use it
2004 nVidia fan. Ati sux since they dont have SM 3.0. Future games will need it!

2003 nVida fan. It doesn't matter that nVidia HW design is behind ATi as long as they perform the same
2004 nVidia fan. I'm not going to buy ATi cause old the old design (even though performance is ~ the same)

Goes both ways doesn't it?

didn't immediately recognize this was an old thread lol...
