Man, this never ends. So much fun 🙂 Nvidia answers right back (again) haha

same thing on extremetech. I say its a tie. anyone else actually think so, or are u all biased in some way? Alls that can come of this is lower prices...

Yeah at this point, I can't really say one is a whole lot better then other. Both companies are offering blistering fast cards with excellent image quality. Although I'm sure there will be endless arguments why one is better then the other.

I wish Doom3 was out to benchmark :-/

I'm almost positive that OpenGL + 32 stencil ops per pass are going to give NV a strong advantage in doom3.

But anything could happen 😀 I'm glad ATi is right up there with NV this round, hopefully we will see a huge price war in a month or two.

All the NV40 cards are going to be great overclockers - they gain quite a bit of performance per clock.

Personally, the thing that struck me most about the 6800GT was that just like the X800Pro it's nearly as fast as the 6800U/UE and the X800XT/XTPE but a hell of a lot cheaper.

I think Nvidia and ATi may have shot themselves in the foot here with their Ultra and Ultra+Extreme+Platinum+etc editions. They only offer about 10-15% more performance for almost 33% more cash? No thanks.

u can just add super-dooper-amazing-limited-extreme-platinum-gold-kickass-edition behind all of them and the latest and greatest buyers will fork over for the marginal gains...

take the 5950U and 9800XT for example...

Heh, yeah most of em. Like you sir, I still use a GeForce 4 (ti 4400 here). It plays everything out at perfectly smooth framerates and good detail.

Since the very top end cards are for bragging rights, they won't care. There will be ~2000 6800U's and 10,000 6800's, God knows about the GT's, but sinc ethere are rumoured to be very few Ultra's, if the GT's perform almost as well, so be it. There may not be many people with enough money, but there won't be many cards to buy either.

GF4s... they're good value for money. my original 4200 8x has lasted me a good year now. i even bought another 1 for my spare rig not so long ago since it's such good value and does what you need it to.

only recently tho it's beginning to show its age. i enjoy playing games @ 1280x1024 with high details. unfortunatly with some of the latest games out, i really can't enjoy those settings anymore so a vid card upgrade is planned for the near future.

tried doom 3 beta on a buddy's computer just today. he had a A64 3000+ with a 9800XT. my god, a stable 35FPS running default (unchangable settings) and falling down to 25FPS when you fire your rifle (smoke of death). that game is amazingly realistic and got me looking forward to buying the full version. i am quite sure the GF4 would not suffice much longer.

only thing i'm concerned about now is whther or not the ground-up drivers for the NV40 core will be as reliable and backward compatible like the kind of driver support we've come to expect out of Nvidia.

Hard to say. I play most of my newer games (BF:V, UT2004, and the ilk) at 1280x960 and medium details, and I rarely get below 30 FPS. My Ti 4400 has been doing it for two years now, and I imagine it can last me until fall when the refreshes come out and I can get a 6800GT for a great price.

I do need to upgrade this year though, as DX9 is finally become the actual standard here after almost 18 months in existence.

I think you are probably right. Then again, Carmack tends to do a good job of making sure his games run very well on all the popular hardware. I just hope Doom 3 isn't going to be a friggin "Way it's meant to be played" BS game. Every time I've seen that logo the game has nothing but stability issues.

Yes, and then I can upgrade with free money from grandparents for university... Erm, well, I guess I'll have to settle for a Cheap FX5900 or R9800...

Flip Flop depending on the situation. This is way it is supposed to be.

The 6800 GT looks like a good candidate for my machine next fall. Overclockers dream 🙂

Wouldn't be surprised to see that it could be flashed to the 6800 Ultra. I'm hoping for a price war over the summer and buy whatever offers the best bang for the buck in the fall.

Yeah, I noticed how close they were also. My theory is CPU bottlenecks holding the 16 pipe cards down a bit. We need to see these benches rerun on a seriously o/c'd AMD or P4 rig.

But the 6800 GT already has 16 pipes enabled though. You mean flash it for clock speed lock? Why not just o/c it?

Bingo! Looks like the 6800 GT could be the next GF4 Ti 4200 if it has a high success rate of overclockability with or without a BIOS flash (counting on the BIOS flash to give it more juice).
