try booting into safe mode and opening a cmd window and then doing this:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc

... then you need to select the option from the top to show hidden devices.

then you'll want to look at everything that is non-present and hidden (except for the things in non-plug and play -- don't remove those). these will show up as a slightly faded image.

if you get the option to check the box to remove the driver as well, then check this box also.

if this doesn't work you may also look at removing and updating your chipset drivers and your bios to whatever the latest thing available is.

I went into safe mode and did what you asked. Here is what I'm seeing:
error screen:
ErrorScreen.JPG
Device Manager (not showing hidden items):
DvcMgrNonHidden.JPG
One hidden file in dvc mgr (nvidia network bus):
nvidianetworkbus.JPG
Another hidden item (ati tray, with an error but, under the Usb / plug & play):
atitrayhidden.JPG

I have never flashed my bios (Gigabyte nforce 3 Ultra). Here are the files that come up from Gigabyte to flash, what would I do?:

I kind of bumped into something online on the hotfix.... it looks like it may only pertain to once your card is installed.. if you get a direct x error? Do you have any other info?

Im not entirely sure if there are driver packages with the hotfixes already applied or if you can only apply them after an install. Try browsing the Sapphire forums for help, there are a few threads regarding 3850 AGP problems. The only other suggestion I have to to try older catalyst driver versions with hot fixes as the latest is not always stable for AGP card owners. I myself am using 8.4 based Omega drivers despite newer ones having been released.

m0mentary & Derek thank you so much for the help. We should get a sticky put in the video forum. I had to update chipset & BIOS and use the hotfix ATI drivers to get things to work. Apparently ATI's WHQL drivers don't work with AGP cards of the 3850 variety. My chipset and bios were long overdue (originals from 2004). Once again.. thanks guys.... I'm loving the new card now.

it's always a good idea to leave chipset/bios/etc alone until there's a problem with your system. This is a good example of agp reaching the end of the line.
