I'm new to all this, and I have read this approach is common and popular. How can I know what to look for, or are all cards capable of having an equal chance at soft mod?

There's really no sure way to tell. The BFG cards seem to have a high success rate from what I've read online.

I think it is just luck of the draw. It seems a 50/50 chance... My BFG unlocked, but even among BFGs, I know a few people who weren't able to unlock them.

I agree that it's a matter of luck. I've had 2 each BFG and PNY. BFG's were earlier models and both were unlockable, but one had some minor defects in the locked pipelines while the other was perfect. Of my PNG's, 1 was old version and 1 was new. The old could be unlocked but locked pipelines had major problems, the newer card didn't unlock (maybe it will w/new RivaTuner?) but has good analog output quality, which none of the other 3 did. Anyway, my experience looks like the 50/50 mentioned above and that's also about the same proportion shown in Guru3D's broader success poll. Whether it ends up working with 12 or 16 pipeliines, you'll have a really good card (especially if you take advantage of some of the discount deals currently available).

All of the new 6800s are "locked" differently than the older 6800s. RivaTuner 15.2 will not unlock any of the newer cards, BUT Riva Tuner 15.3 is due out sometime this month and promises to unlock. There is a script you can enter that will unlock currently, but it is best if you wait for 15.3 to debut.

Your best bet if you want to softmod is to wait until 15.3 comes out and go from there.
