building a new rig and think its bout time the 9500pro retired, its been a very good card to me and basically i wonder why my friend even bothered spending the extra on the 9700pro, the 9500 has played pretty much everything ive thrown at it. ill be keeping it for a kinda hand e down rig i guess

im an ATI man myself, but i have to say it seems NV have the upperhand, opengl is fantastic and tbh it looks like their SM2 is right up there with ATI, and plus they got SM3 too....IMO ATI fans only have "more efficient AA and AF" to wave at nvidia and that jus doesnt cut it

now i dont have 400-500 quid for a x800xt or 6800U but may jus be able to squeeze a 6800gt if i wait till end of september. i thought maybe x800pro but at the same price as the 6800gt there is no contest, better af and aa cannot make up the deficit of 4 extra pipes "no replacement for displacement" comes to mind

so i found this 6800nu an it sells for 216 pounds on overclockers uk...having seen its performance in D3 and other games im pretty convinced this is a great bang for the buck card......my only niggel?...its only 128mb card but hardocp says itll do doom 3 on high qual at 12x10 so it cant be that bad

what u think of this card?

After seeing hardocp's comparison of cards, I decided I would go with the 6800 vanilla, since it was in stock, and my 9800pro took a huge poop on me. evga offers a great tradeup program if I decide to use it, but I do not know if they ship to england, or wherever quid come from.

seems silly really to be upgrading based on one game, but i want doom to look great, my 9500pro according to Hardocp will be best on 800x600 and medium, -----medium i can live with, 800x600 i havent seen for years!!!!, but i think NV wil also be killer in HL2, dont think ATI can hold on to the HL2 crown TBH

Personally if I needed a new graphics card now, I'd get a friend in the USA to ship an 6800GT over. Stupid marketing guys in UK just swapped the $ for the £, such a rip off.

And as for HL2 running better on a NV chip - you've got to be kidding, there's a good reason HL2 is 'packaged' with ATi cards...

Actually, I believe that the cooler on the card you linked to might be better than the Leadtek card has. It appears that it has a modified VGA silencer on it, which is a pretty well renowned graphics card cooler.

i believe that will not be the case somehow, last gen cards yes of course ATI walked all over NV, but look at this NV is beatin ATI in farcry, aquamark and sometimes in 3d mark, HL2 is still yet to see the light of day and u can bet NV is workin hard with valve to get things runnin nice on the 5x00 series and 6800 series

I'll put MONEY on it that the team working on HL2 used ATi hardware - mainly as its a base standard - hence why it'll run better on the ATi hardware. It'll run well on nvidia 6800 series, but I wont be suprised if the ATi has a 10% margin. Personally I actually prefer Nvidia due to the digital vibrance control, makes images bounce off the screen, and was very glad to see the 6800 do well. So this isnt a "fan boy" screaming out. This is logic in place.

And as for the 5x00 series, go google. HL2 makes use of true 32-bit floating point calculations within the game for dynamic lighting and such. 5x series just dont have the muscle when it comes to that. The developers admitted it themselves. So much so , that they practically flamed nvidia for it.
