I recently purchased a 6800 AGP to use in my XP2800+ system (MSI K7N2DL board), and I have been noticing quite a bit of system noise when I am running 3D applications and when scrolling in Windows (especially with IE, but turning off smooth scrolling did help somewhat). The noise is electronic, not mechanical, and it comes through my speakers. The noise isn't a constant pitch, and it seems to change depending on what is being displayed on the screen and how fast things are moving. My power supply is an Antec 350 TrueBlue, and when I monitor the +12V rail (when in Windows or running a 3D application) I am getting a constant +11.80 - +11.86V, scrolling or not. I know noise was a problem with some of the 5xxx series cards, but I haven't seen much with respect to the 6800 cards. Could this be a power supply issue? Could it be noise from a case fan? I do have the card connected to a molex connecter from the power supply that isn't connected to anything else.

System build details
AMD XP2800+ with stock cooling
MSI K7N2DL
Antec TrueBlue 350
2 Optical drives (DVD-ROM, DVD burner)
2 hard drives (WD, IBM)
1 floppy drive
5 case fans (2 with LED) + 2 fans on the power supply
Soundblaster Audigy sound

Thanks in advance,

Dave

That 350W supply is the biggest I have at the moment. I will probably just go ahead and get a bigger (and quieter) PSU and see what happens. I can always use the 350 somewhere else.

Weird question what drivers are you using? I knew someone with a similar issue that was caused my newer drivers. I still don't know why specifically.

I'm running the 81.85 drivers at this time. I will drop back to an older version and see if that helps.

Record the sound it makes and send it to S.E.T.I. for analysis.. perhaps its a communication from a distant world.

Does the volume of the noise increase as you turn up your speakers volume? I had an old Compaq laptop that would make an electronic feebackish noise when the mouse or scroll pad were being used. Very wierd. Just had to live with it.

Just for kicks, is it definately the video card? Try swapping it out and putting an older video card back in... see if all-things-are-equal otherwise, if you get the same problem or not with a differant video card... at least then you should be able to isolate if it's definately the video card or not.
