6800 GT = what from ATI?

Mullzy

I'll be watching for price drops on the 6800 GT 256MB nVidia cards over the next 6 months until they hit my magic number. I'm just a little confused about the current ATI offerings and I'd like to know what the 6800 GT's closest competitor is performance-wise (not price-wise).

I currently have a 9800 PRO overclocked nicely so anything short of a 6800 GT is not really going to be worth it.

Please advise.

cheers,
Mullzy

Too hard to look at the benchmarks?

The X800Pro is generally a bit slower than the 6800GT (it's between the 6800NU and 6800GT almost all of the time -- depends on the exact test). It's about as fast or faster at HL2. That's the card that ATI markets in the $400 price bracket (the same as the 6800GT).

The X800XT, their $450-500 card, generally beats he 6800GT (except at a handful of things like Doom3, and a couple other OGL games that ATI just has unusually bad performance on, like Jedi Knight 3).

The upcoming $300 X800XL -- essentially an underclocked X800XT -- is just about the same speed as the 6800GT (faster in HL2, slower in Doom3, about the same in everything else). But availability thus far is poor, and what cards you can find are priced around $400. It's also PCIe only, at least for the moment.

I went from a 9800P to a 6800 GT not too long ago. Frankly the difference between the the two, overclocked or no, is like night and day. Since I'm not in the market now I haven't been keeping up wth ATI's response to the GT, so I can't speak to that. But I can say that I play HL2 1280x1024 without stuttering, at 4xAA, 8XAF and with all settings maxed. It's smooth as silk, regardless of what happens on screen. The GT is a great card, as long as you keep it cool. 😉

AGP or PCI-e?

For pci-e, the x800XL also gets my vote. $300 and it should oc nicely, but who know when they'll hit the market.

For AGP, I'd grab a 6800GT unless HL2 is very important. Mine does 400/1100 (ultra speeds) pretty easy and you should be able to find a deal like the $320 Microcenter deal last month.

Either way, nice cards for all the current games.

I have an X800 Pro(the price equivalent to the 6800 GT) and I'm VERY happy with it. I'm very CPU limited here with my AXP 3000+, but in the end it all comes down to what prices you can get on them. Where I live, I managed to get an X800 Pro for like, literally about 50-70 bucks cheaper than a 6800 GT, which was pretty cool.

So if you either A. have the money, or B. find a cheap 6800 GT i'd go with it. Otherwise the X800 Pro is a great choice also, they are both amazingly fast cards, and the 12 pipelines doesn't hurt that much. Also, if you get a VIVO like mine, you can unlock the extra 4 pipes. I've yet to do it since I'm already CPU limited, and I'm afraid to hurt my card, but some people are willing.

Even if HL2 is important, it's not like the 6800GT doesn't scream at it.

For the money, there is really no reason not to go 6800GT. If you can find a deal on the X800Pro though, it's a great card.

he sums it up nicely...

theres really nothing "equal" to it at the moment..assuming you cant find a x800xl

the x800pro is a step below and the x800xt is a step above...small steps, but steps regardless

For people complaining about 6800gt HL2 performance, i can run it at 10x7 (sorry, the most my monitor supports) with 8xS AA and 16xAF with all the settings maxed with absolutily no slowdown. I know it's a low res, but i think it would only require the drop to 4x AF if i went to 12x10

just my 2 cents😉

I can do all that at 1600x1200.

Thanks everyone... I have exactly the info I was looking for. I've been hoping to go back to nVidia the next time I upgrade (the 9800 Pro has been great but for a while there were a lot of annoying driver issues) but wasn't really sure if the price😛erformace ratio was back in favor of them.

When I bought my 9800 Pro it was no comparison, hopefully in 6 months I can say the same about the 6800 GT. I guess time will tell what pricing games get played.
