I may finally overclock my card to see what kind of improvement I get in the HL2 VST and in CSS beta. Anyone have a link to a guide that shows the easiest and safest way to overclock my GT? Sorry for the newb question. :)

Played my new BFG 6800GTOC at 400/1100 last night. No problems playing Doom 3 at those settings. It failed the test at 425. I haven't really tried any other settings while playing Doom 3 yet.

you get the feeling we're invisible here ... ?! anyway, i found coolbits2 at guru3d. it involves a whole lot more changes to the reg than just adding one line, but apparently gets a whole bunch more tweaked settings. since i don't have a clue about most of the settings in the unmodified driver i'm happy just using coolbits and getting the chance to oc this sucker.

results to come!

on a related topic ... i just ran 3dmark 2001 against my non-oc'ed pny 6800 gt and only scored 16+k 3dmarks - 2000 less than what i scored with my 9800 non-pro. of course, the np was overclocked as was my cpu, but still! i'm wondering if perhaps 3dm2001 is just getting long in the tooth and just can't test these new cards to their full potential? even tho it scored low it looked great - i saw detail i've never seen before and no stuttering at all, even on the "merry-go-round" with 8 light sources - amazing!

I posted this in another thread unrelated to over clocking, but since I posted in this thread I will add my updated results.

Well, I think I can agree that the cooler (solid copper) on this BFG is a POS. I don't know the quality of the first cooler for the BFG's.

I used star wars galaxies to check the temp because it runs well in windowed mode so I could watch the temp gauge. At first I thought it was high but not that bad. I ran around "playing" and it seem to hold at 90-91. Yes higher than most I've seen but not alarming. Then I noticed that when I didn't move (in the game) it seemed to put more pressure on the card. I'm not sure why but it slowly climbed to 100 C before I decided to shut down SWG. It might have went even hotter, but I was affraid to see. I don't see any reason to think 100 was the hottest was going to go. This was at 400/1100 clock settings. I noticed artifacts somewhere around 98 C.

I lowered the settings back to factory 370/1000 and the temp seems to max at 96 C. Not enough to cause artifacts but hot none the less.

My case I would consider a good cooling case but it is full of stuff. It is an all aluminum server size case. It has an extended ATX dual Opteron motherboard, 5 raptor SATA, SATA raid card, SCSI card, sound card, DAT drive, zip drive, floppy drive, CDRW drive, DVDRW drive, 2 fans in the front that blow over the hard drives, one large fan on the back, and a 560 watt powersupply with two fans (one internal and one external) in it.

I'm really really really disappointed with these results. Even though it seems to "play" fine with no artifacts and no lock ups, that temp scares me. I think I will be leaving it at default clock rate.

Cold, is it possible that you have disabled a fan setting in coolbits? Are you using Coolbits 2??

I have that newer version BFG GT too and the coolbits autodetect thing only shows 385/1030. I thought that was due to my power supply, which just barely works with this card at stock speeds, but it would be very bad if their new cooler design was really that much worse than the normal one. I get about 63C idle (ambient 47C) but how do I monitor my load temperatures? They change so quickly that I cannot exit a game fast enough to see an accurate reading. I tried playing UT2004 in a window (only recent game I have that runs properly like this, although I think it shows up in 640x480) with the nvidia control panel in the background, but that resolution obviously didn't tax the video card much and the temperature didn't even go above 70C. Is there any way to see the temperatures from a few seconds ago rather than the current ones?

I am using coolbits 2, I was unable to find the fan settings. I'm pretty sure that both fans were actually working because I tested it at first with the case open and it seem to be blowing air. But if you can point me to the settings I will check further. Thanks.

I suggest you download this program rthdribl which is a direct x 9 stress test that runs in a window. It will give you a good idea of what your temps are under full load.

So far using the rivara tuner temp monitoring program and playing Far Cry has gotten my temps highiest. About 5C highier than rthdribl ever did. IE 80C while OCed to 425/1140. I ussully get to about 75C or so with rthdribl.

got a XFX 6800 GT on friday, have flashed to to a leadtek 6800 ultra bios for the .1v increase on the GPU. I have run the card up to 425Core and the ram at 1.22GHz stable so far... damn heat isn't up to 80C under load though, i think i need better cooling before i push it farther.

440x1150 OC with Gainward 6800GT Golden Sample. No issues running doom3 at all with this setting. GPU Temp does go up from about 55 to 67 though.

Timedemo in Demo3 at 440x1150 (no AA)
1024x768 84.3 fps
1600x1200 69.2 fps

However I have scaled it down to 420x1150.

This is a great card:)
