Have you ever heard of an exchange rate before?
182.07 GBP = 322.086 USD
for an overclocked 6800nu core with GT GDDR3
and that doesn't include shipping from the UK...
6800GT AGP for $289.00 shipped from newegg in stock and ready to go...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130203
The GS is only a good deal in PCI-E because it's cheap.
Get a PCI-E motherboard and stopped getting raped on video cards.

i agree
OP just get a PCI-E mobo............and before you ask, yes you can get PCI-E socket 754 mobos if you need one, (theyre based on the NF4 -4X chipset) and they are reasonably cheap.
having looked at this XFX 6800GS, and if those specs are true, and if my assumptions are true (ie it being based of the older NV40, hence the reason its not clocked so high as the PCI_e ver) then i really dont think its worth your time.
picking up a used 6800gt would probably land you better off.
your gonna have to go PCI-E some time, AGP is out......you'll be much better off if you just suck it up and buy a PCI-E mobo

I would love to go PCIe, but i have a P4 skt 478 3.0E, not too many boards around for that. I also need a new PSU (mine is a Rosewill 400w), and more RAM (Ihave 512mb generic). So the only way i can get in the game is to go AGP. Also, I would need a copy of windws xp....using a new board and all. The copy I have now is from a retail computer that I bought a yr and a half ago. They dont include the discs anymore, but give u a utility to make your own restore disc![]()

what about the motherboard drivers (chipset right?)? arent they included with my restore disc ? so when i go put a new mobo in, will those drivers conflict with the new ones?

$299 for an AGP Radeon X850XT with a $50 rebate. $250 for a card that will certainly outperform the 6800GS.

As far as Windows goes, you have a legit license, so I'm sure you can figure out a way to get a Windows CD from somewhere that you can use.

The thing is... Buy staying on an AGP platform, you are just prolonging the inevitable and screwing yourself over in the process. Case in point, you're willing to spend $289 on an AGP 6800GT when you could be getting a skt939 motherboard and 7800GT for $360.

You could use your current RAM, pick up an Anthlon64 3000+ for $150, and decent PSU for $75.
As far as Windows goes, you have a legit license, so I'm sure you can figure out a way to get a Windows CD from somewhere that you can use.
That puts you at a grand total of $585 for almost a whole new PC that will smoke your current box even if it did have a $289 6800GT in it (which will be worth next to nothing by the time you decide to get rid of it). If you get a bit more crafty, you can take a peek on ebay and see what P4 skt 478 3.0E's are going for used... I did, and it looks like people are easily getting $125. This brings your total out of pocket cost down to $460. Be creative, I bet you can make this work if you try.
Then again, it's up to you. Don't let me pressure you... I'm just showing you an example of how you could go for a much larger upgrade by spending a little more. There are other people on AT forums that are way better then me at finding this stuff too, check out the Hot Deals forums.
