6800 bottleneck?

Hey guys,

Am I seriously handicapping my 6800 with my CPU (barton 2500+)? Games are running pretty well, but I am wondering if I would get a serious boost with a CPU upgrade, or just a modest one.

Depends on the game. Doom3, for instance, is paticularly cpu hungry. What games are you having trouble with?

i got a boost overclocking my 2600+ to 2.2ghz. if it's unlocked try to bump up fsb to 400 and multiplier to 11 and it's be like a 3200+

I am playing Far Cry right now, but I am thinking about HL2 and beyond. My system doesn't OC worth crap either, so that's not really an option for me.

Far Cry loves a fast CPU. The outdoor areas are really CPU limited, especially with lots of Mercs running around.

would a lower end AMD 64, say a 2800 or 3000, make a marked difference over a 3000 barton? I can get the latter for cheaper and I wouldnt have to get a new mobo.

i would try to OC the CPU you have now before upgrading

if you choose to upgrade, the low end A64 wil still be better

He has already stated his "system doesn't OC worth a crap".

I too would perfer a lower-end A64 than a higher end AXP.

Yep, a faster barton would hardly make much of a difference, an a64 on the otherhand would be much more effective.
