yeah its nice...but what do you have right now? chances are if you've got a quality 400 or up, you won't have any problems. a couple of the sites benched theirs on 420s, and one on a 300w IIRC. so you may not have to upgrade.

Why not wait until ATI's X800 reviews are done in a week or so? Chances are that the Radeon X800 will have much lower power requirements, with equal or greater performance. Why spend extra money when you don't need to?

Well, i'd have to get a new system just to run one of those bad boys. I think i'll convince myself to wait until socket 939.

Please post the link if you can find it. Thanks a lot.

I just purchased a new Nexus 350w PSU and will probably have to pass on the 6800U if it needs too much juice.

A known FB? Interesting... my recent posts in the video form are only a few days old. Good logic idiot. My conclusion is simple: Wait until the X800 reviews come in before you decide. What is so hard to comprehend about that? You two guys obviously ride the short bus to school.

What's to decide about? The likelyhood of ATI comming out on top this time isn't stacking up in their favor, and stop using the "short bus to school" crack, it's getting old
rolleye.gif
Besudes, some people won't even buy ATI, and likewise, some people won't buy nVidia, so there.

Rudee - almost every review shows that the existing ATI card is about the same power requirements of the 6800U. Several leaked screenshots of the upcoming X800 already show a pair of Molex connectors - Same power issues for both. The best thing would have been minimum recommendations for PS outputs rather than a blanket 480W statement. Just don't be surprised if the ATI card needs MORE power than the 6800U...

It doesn't matter what little fanboy things you think. The fact is the best option for the OP would be to wait until both (or even just production 6800s) are at market, and then see what the requirements are, before buying a system to take any new video card.

You may be right. We'll find out in couple weeks once x800 reviews are in.

I don't understand, why everyone is expecting ATI's power requirements to go up? Seeing as how they are moving from a .15 micron process (9800XT) to a .13 micron, low-k process.

Forgive this long post but I just wanted to show us all what a busy beaver you have with your recent posts in the video forum that are only a few days old. And I thank you for calling me an idiot, which was unwarranted although I really could care less. If your posts don't scream fanboy, then no others posts will.

I'd prefer not to own a graphics card which causes my montly electical bill to go up by 10% just to play a few games. If ATI can pull off equal performance numbers with the Radeon X800 with less power requirements, I'm going to go with ATI. I just upgraded my power supply to 400w... I'm not doing it again if I don't need to.

Looks as though it would be a waste to purchase a NV40 without a power supply upgrade and a CPU upgrade. I think anything less than a Athlon 64 3400 would be a waste. I'm probably going to wait until AMD releases their Athlon 64 3700 before I upgrade my video card. By then, the card will be lower priced and the new processors will mate perfectly with the performance of these cards. However, I do have a preference for ATI's AA settings, thus I'm going to wait for ATI's product to come out before I do anything.

I'm willing to bet that ATI will be able to pull off equal or greater performance with the R420 (Radeon X800) without the ridiculous power supply requirements. That in itself will be enough of a deciding factor to swing opinion in ATI's favor. There's not many factory PC's that are shipping with 480w power supplies, thus this is going to hurt the bottom line when it comes to mainstream sales. And if ATI can capitolize on this by having lower hardware requirements, they will ultimately be more successful in overall sales.

I predict disappointment. People are getting attached to buzzwords like "8x this" or "3 times that" and thinking that the NV40 will absolutely destroy the competition with benchmarks on popular games off the charts. It ain't going to happen... It's going to be more like people saying: "What, only an extra 15 frames a sec on UT200??? What a disappointment!"

The key words they use in marketing is "up to"... not 8 times, up to 8 times. which could be anything from zero and upward. Kind of like those bulllhit weighloss gimmicks that promise weightloss of up to 15 pounds the first week, although the majority only loses a couple pounds.

I'm going to predict in advance that ATI is going to win this round, as I find these benches rather disappointing when you factor how many of them are near the performance of the 9800XT.

Not to mention my PSU makes crazy noises all the time for as long as it is stuck on my mobo.
Excellent piece of engineering!!
ATi Radeon features:
Rolling Lines
PSU high pitch noises
DX9
Excellent 2D and 3D graphics.

Enjoy!

Even in light of all the amazing results the NV40 has produced, you have had not one good thing to say about it. Just bad things that are unfounded.

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

It is rumoured to have 160~180m transistors in total.
The NV40 has 220~.
Both made with a similar process (or same), so it would be logical to assume that the ATi product will have at most the same power requirements.
