6750 to Q9550?

Hey guys, I'm thinking to upgrading my 6750 to a q9550, as Microcenter has them for 184 after tax. I read the whole thread on dual vs quad, and also most of the i7 threads. Do you all think it'd be worth it?

Right now I'm running my CPU stock, due to needing a new case for better cooling. If I can OC that CPU to say around 3.2 or 3.4, would that be good enough to offset the 9550? I like to play fully 3d games, no WoW or anything. Want to play GTA4, Warhead, and probably another run through Mass Effect, plus some of the new one's coming out.

Thanks!

for more of a wow factor from dual to quad, i would make the jump to i7.

microcenter has good deal on the i7 920, you should get that instead of the q9550.

i went from a e2160@3.0 to q9550 @ 3.7 (still finding max cpu speed) and the wow factor wasnt as much as i anticipated and i am kind of kicking myself a little for not going for the i7 but i did have an extra s775 mainboard that i had lying around that i put to use instead.

i would say that if you plan on selling your motherboard, cpu, and RAM, then go for i7. if you dont want to then just get a Q9550.

Yea, I just bought a new system last Oct, and have already gone from a 8800GTS 320 to a 260, so was hoping to maybe get a little jump, then maybe i7 or i5 sometime in 2010.

Doesn't seem worth it. You're telling him to buy a CPU that costs $100 more, then buy a new motherboard for another $170, then buy new ram for another $80 (assuming 3x2gb). Is the i7 really $350 better than a Q9550? Hell no.

OP, check your motherboard specs to see if it actually supports the Q9550. My CPU is from the same generation as yours and the motherboard I bought at that time doesn't support any quad core.

Yea, it does. I've checked it already.
