Yep, and when you upgrade to the business account, they put you on the private "business cable loop"

Also, DSL isn't shared like cable, see, with cable, everyone's on the same line, which runs to the cable comany, and out a T3 to the internet.

With DSL, everyone's on thier own line, which runs to the DSL company, and through a T3 to the internet....

Oh, wiat, you still share the T3 (or OC-12, or whatever)

Yeah, and a $20 linksys crap network card will be SOOO much better than any other generic card....

I have a 2+ year old IBM 10/100 NIC. How much of a speed increase could I get if I get a new card and make it a Linksys?

Nevermind the fact that you don't get anything near 10Mbps on a cable/DSL link, let alone 100Mbps. YOu mihgt see an increase going for 10base2 to 10baseT....

Oh wait nevermind....he's right. Some crap 10/100 cards are ACTUALLY Gigabit cards and will also force the cable company's line speed to gigabit.
Duh.

<<i used to live in the kaimuki area about 6 months ago and i was hitting anywhere between 50k - 200k. i know got lots of people in that area got cuz when i got it installed i was talking to the guy and he was telling me how he just installed my neighbors one a week before and also my friend couple houses down had it too....he also said that kaimuki already had 3 routers up...and about that thing with the NICs...its not really the brand that matters..its the speed of the actual card..just like modems they got speeds and if you got a card thats slow your gonna be slow...and when someone i knew first got rr in aiea they were only hitting 20k at the most..so no complain....they were worse before...it kinna goes up and down >>

<<you've got to remember that cable service unlike DSL is shared. If there are alot of people in you're area on the same RR Router then connection speeds will be a little slow. OUt here in Kapolei on Barber's point though I can max out at 500k/s. You can pay an extra like 20-30 more a month and upgrade to their bussiness account then you will have less traffic on your rr router and you should see more stable connection speeds. Also how old/new is your Networkcard. Is it one you bought or one that rr gave you? If its the one rr gave you I suggest you have them replace it or buy a linksys for about $20 at compusa. It could be that as well. >>

k.. check this out.> OCEANIC CABLE has a couple ATM Concentrators in Kaimuki, because we are pretty populated with RR users... The nic card DOES matter, in the sense that if you have a older than your mom's latest set of panties Network Card, utilizing your ISA bus, yea, you be your left nut or breast that it will make a difference..... The Business accounts, the ROAD RUNNER PRO X accounts are on another network...weel.. technically segmented off from the main line, so the degredation of the line will be of the minimum if your neighborhood 14 year old is serving up his warez and porn using serv U.

JUST FYI... unless you live in honolulu, and not in ALABAMA, dont go telling people to start slapping others, because you dont know whats going on here. for the LONGEST TIME , they were giving out their 3com etherlink ISA cards... MANY people had that card.. it WILL make a speed difference if you are running a fast machine.
