I am looking for a good video card to play NBA Live '06, Madden, etc. on my pc. I am going to get the X2 4200+ as well.

So I've been cutting and it's down to two. I want the card to be silent, because that's just how I am, so I need passive cooling. So far, the only two around my budget ($125-$180) are the Gigabyte cards. Either the 6600GT or the X800XL. So my question is which one is better at gaming around the 1600x1200 range?

Obviously the x800xl. Its in a class and price range above the 6600gt.

Other cards to consider are the 6800gs and gto2 for under $200 if you shop carefully and the GTO for $150.

Well, the x800xl will definitely be much faster. But at 1600x1200, some demanding modern games will run too slow unless you turn down some settings. Even a 7800gtx struggles with FEAR at 1600x1200, so just dont expect too much from the x800xl.

Is that Radeon X800XL available in AGP and is it faster than a Radeon 9800XT?

I may need a replacement card for my 2nd computer that has an Epox 8RDA+ motherboad with AGP slot, but the old ASUS Geforce 4 T-4800 is going bad. I'd like something a little faster and well under $200 if possible.

hey you;re right, i must have missed the x800xl agp announcement.

they use the realto bridge chip to get it to work....makes the card more expensive...same as the R480 chips that available on AGP...Also the XL is considerably longer than the PCIe XL....

6600gt=8 pipelines
x800xl=16 pieplines

It's safe to assume the x800xl will crush the 6600gt in every benchmark.

And the AGP X800XL USED to be $200-250 USD. But that was back in August of '05. Now I think you can find one for $300+. I think the only place cheaper would be Ebay.

OP - I know you want a silent card, but there really aren't any in your price range that will run new games well at 1600x1200 at good settings. I don't know if you have a CRT where you can lower the res, but if not you might want to reconsider.

I think basically all pci-e native agp cards use that chip but they are comparable in size to the pci-e versiob(6600gt, 6800gt, x800pro) why is this longer?

Well I feel bad about this question, because I think sometimes video card lovers make out what's required to play a game to be more than it is. An X800XL should be ok playing Doom 3, Half Life 2, Far Cry, and even Battlefield 2, IF you don't mind perforance in the 50-60fps range (which is probably OK). On the other hand newer games like FEAR, COD:2, and Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory probably won't play well at all at that resolution. It just depends on what you want to play.

that's ok. i'm not a hardcore gamer and don't feel it necessary to splurge on video cards when in less than 3 months, they will be outdated! i just didn't know if you meant the passive heatsink would be a problem?

The problem with passive heatsinks is if you plan to overclock then you can run into limitations. As long as you don't want to overclock, you will be fine buying a passively cooled card.

I dont know.
Here is a link to a Russian site (first one i saw) that has pictures of the PCIe and AGP varieties...the AGP is a lot bigger in comparison...maybee even comparable to a X1800

Just to let you AGP X800XL would be purchasers know, it is a very large card. Took me awhile to manuver it into my shuttle and I had to use the second sata port so that I could still use my hard drive. The first one was blocked by the card. Though, I imagine if you have atleast a midsized case you won't have this problem.
