Anyway you look at it, watching movies on a computer is a crappy way to do it.

In the Best Buy/Circuit City/Etc. ad in your town, is there 5 pages of computer monitors that say "The BEST way to watch movies! Stick your face a foot in front of a tiny little screen!"?

No.

Even on a 36" tv 8-10' away is an infinitely better movie experience, a teeny little PC monitor can't provide immersion for movie viewing. If there was a law in this country "only one person to a house", people would still all watch movies on their tvs.

no. maybe when i get a hdtv...

I see. So you'll watch a movie on a little tiny screen with your face on top of the monitor so you can see it at higher resolution. Makes sense to me, I'd guess 97-98% of Americans feel the same way.

I was wrong, the 6600GT is clearly the way to go.

1) its about the angle.
2) when i feel like it i use my tv.
3) your missing the point 'i like movies' = ima do a lot of encoding. 6800gt = broken video processor will not help encoding. hell it doesnt even help decoding.

You're missing the point:

In a few weeks nVidia will release software that will accelerate encoding on all 6800s. I have seen the specs for it.

Watching movies on screens that are 1970 size makes no sense unless you're stuck using your laptop somewhere.

how do you know this? and why would nvidia have admitted that theres something physically wrong with the video processor of the 6800s when there isnt? (some letter about trying to implement it but finding out that it still utilizes the cpu...// its somewhere here in the forum and on inq)

ok im not gonna argue about my watching habbits. if i go close to a tv i get a head ache if i sit close infront of a good monitor i do not. when sitting 3 feet away from a 21" the angle is bigger than when i sit 9 feet away from a 42" tv. you dont have to understand this and you may watch your movies on whatever device you please.

It as to my understanding after readig all these things, that it cannot be fixed w/ a new driver. It's actually the NV40 in the 6800's. Supposedly the NV43 which is in the 6600's is working fine.

For me, I would hold off buying any nVidia card until these new drivers are released and tested (IMO).

But if you need a video card NOW for what you're doing, either take your chances w/ the 6600 or get an ATI.

Really?

Who do you think is right?

Me, the guy who's seen the material that's under NDA right now that no one can legally post about? (and you'll note I haven't posted anything specific at all about this)

Or you, the guys who's read what people guess about the situation?

I wonder.

Where has nVidia admitted "something is wrong with the 6800VP"? Link?

To each his own on viewing movies I guess, but I'd guess you're way outside the "norm" for this issue.

Anyway, have patience, better stuff coming for 6800 WMV encode/decode.

i dont know you? how would i know what you saw or know or read what-so-ever? im too lazy to link this but its in this very forum and on inq. the thread here was called official 6800's videoprocessor thread or something like that. basically its a bunch of 6800 owners who complain about it not working. in there is a link to a statement of nvidia that was also posted at the inq. im surprised you havent read it.

so you work for nvidia or what?

The Inquirer posts FUD half the time.

The thread here is people who don't know who are justly worried about some functionality of the hardware they paid for.

I don't work for nVidia.

I forwarded the thread here to a friend at nVidia because I saw how upset people were getting with the issue and wanted to help. He showed me some documentation of upcoming software that is supposed to enable hardware acceleration in the nV40 for any video type, gave me the OK to tell people I had seen what they're planning to hopefully put their minds at ease that nVidia is trying to resolve the issue for them. (on the condition I not post specifics of what he showed me)

I'm sorry my response came across as sarcastic; for doing the above I took more than a little flak in my own thread on the subject, and the one you reference, because some people demanded I post details and want to believe the worst (apparently).

Anyway, that's the story. From what I know, the 6800s will accelerate in hardware WMV soon.

6800OC easy. More pipelines, possible RivaTuner softmod, etc.

Faster is almost every sense.

You're an interesting ATer.

I flat out tell you I've seen NDA material that promises processor offloading for the 6800s within a few weeks, and you post "they all don't work".

In a few weeks one of us will be proven wrong, I hope it's you for the sake of all the 6800 owners who are concerned about video encoding.

Ya, I read the thread, but if Nvidia has a patch coming out for the video processor then Im not to worried. However, I think I should hold of anyways since there may be some price drops next week.

dude id prefer them to work. im just not sure how much i should trust you and your friend who i also dont know on this matter. thing is at the moment they do not work. if they got em to work before the nf4 is available i might even get one. if not ill go 6600gt and save money. either is fine with me. i think nvidia promised to fix it with the drivers that are out by now tho and they did not fix it. this is the internet and bacially you could tell/ promise me anything and i couldnt come back to you if the vp is in fact broken on the hardware side now could i?

Have you seen graphs and charts or actual drivers\software that was installed on your PC that works? I'm not trying to sound threatening, just want to know if there's even the slight possibility of a smoke and mirror job.

I could be wrong, I've only seen the documentation of the fix, not used it.

If you check my posts earlier this year, you'll see I got a reference 6800NU before release, and the Far Cry SM3 patch long before release. That might lend some credibility to my assertion that I have a buddy at nVidia who tosses me a bone now and again, as I'm just a hobbyist gamer like you, not a member of the press or industry.

I haven't received this software as yet, so you're right, there is a possibility what I've seen equates to ATIs redefinition of "trilinear". It didn't look like it to me, but we'll see soon. From what I saw it looks to me like you will have hardware acceleration of WMV encode/decode soon on 6800s.

Anand has posted Nvidia isn't committing to a release date so he's not commenting on it, I'd take that to be gospel. I hope it's sooner rather than later, I was only told when the current NDA expires on the material I saw.

im just annoyed with nvidia for releasing cards that dont work the way they should right away. i dont like ati either and the 6000s seem to be a better deal to me. i also think the 6600gt is capable of running everything at 1024x768 and i dont need a higher res anyway. if however the 6800 would work and encode / decode faster than the 6600gt id get that one.

i am also trying to make this decision, but here in england 6800nu is ~$400, and 6600gt ~$300

would the 6800 still be the better buy? i'm leaning towards the 6600gt atm.
