After some bad luck with 2 Aopen 6600GT's I decided to give the Chanitech 6600GT a shot.

Cards on the FedEx truck on it's way to me as I type....Hopefully this one will work in my system :)

Not that the X700Pro sucks or anything....Actually a nice card....Will go in daughters system if all goes well.

Later,

Edit: Chaintech 6600GT saves the day!!!!

I just ordered one (Sparkle 6600gt) from a place in NJ called Power Leap. I found them in a search on Price Watch. They had 2 cards in stock I guess I got one of them. Their # is 866 757 2537, they should have 0ne left and getting more. Good luck! I should have mine by Monday or Tuesday, and can then start assembling the new rig.

Just got a chance to install the card.

Fired up 3Dmark 03....Look'd much sweeter on the 6600GT than the X300(Sucks)....Couldn't believe the frames this was pumping out :)

Then boom black screen....Exit 3Dmark, start test over, screen garbled :(

Card has a defective mem chip ? Core ? I'm leaning more towards the Mem....The OEM drivers have the frequency option built into them. I tried underclocking the card and it fails at even the lowest core\mem speed :(

Works great in 2d but any 3d and the screen is garble city, artifacts everywhere :(

I doubt it could be a driver problem as it was working great up until the black screen in 3dmark. I figure a mem chip took a dump.

Sucks getting my 1st defective product

Looks like RMA time....Better luck next time I hope :)

Got a replacement....Same crap....Must be non compatable brand or something....Tried it in both my son's and daughters machines....Images even distorted in DXDIAG as well....Daughters system was first booted today, been sitting in the garage boxed up still.

On another note picked up a X700PRO from Best Buy....Works great :) much better than original card

3dmark03 went from 1858 up to 7538 :) dropped a couple hundred points with the 8.09's ?

3dmark05 breaks 3000 with the 8.09's got 2799 with the shipped drivers :)

Later,

Did you make sure you cleaned out all the ATI drivers using driver cleaner before you installed the card?

AND, you're starting to worry me also because I have an 8400 and just ordered a 6600 GT also. But I do have a different brand so I'll see how that one goes.

Yes did uninstall thru control panel....Then used driver cleaner to remove rest of them....The first card worked great for about 2 minutes....Second one pretty much started with artifacts :( on system one.

So I thought maybe it's the system....Me goes into garage and whips out another 8400 :)

System 2 was a no go without bios update to start.....Exact same thing as system 1 except system 2 was booted today for the first time....As with the first card it will not pass the nvidia frequency test at any speed at all....Not even at 125\250 :(

Only thing i did notice about the Aopen card is it does not seem to firmly seat in slot ? Kinda will rock back and forth from end to end when installing....Ok once clamped down tho....Both ATI cards are solid in the slot do not move at all....Possibly the heatsink or fan was touching the PCI slot ? Unable to see it tho.

I will stick with the ATI X700PRO for at least one of the systems :) The other system will either get the same or a X700XT when available. :)

I don't really feel like going thru the hassle with the 6600GT unless I get some confirmed results from others that the card is working....Maybe it just a Aopen 6600GT incompatability with the 8400's

I've had the Sparkle 6600GT for about a week, no problems at all.
I'm using a foxconn 915 mb though.

edit: added mb info

Dont think it was tearing....Both cards would not even underclock with the OEM drivers frequency controls....They would fail at 150\250

I'm thinking its maybe more of a bios issue wtih the 8400? Or maybe a bad batch of cards?

I have given up on the 6600GT for now :(

I'll just run with the X700PRo for now....If I can get a 6600GT that will work I'll just put the X700 in my daughters rig.

I have posted in the Dell forums....Hopefully I'm not the only one who has an 8400 and wants to pop a 6600GT in it.

Do you know if any 6600s can pass the test? It could be that the test is simply incompatable with the PCIe cards.

Chaintec is Taiwanese based.... and since Taiwan is a leading manufacturer and developer of semiconductor/microprocessor technology, I'm sure it'll work great

If I had a motherboard with an nVidia chipset, will there be any advantages in getting a video card from the same company such as the 6600GT over something else such as the X700Pro.

Actually a lot of the manufacturers of video cards are Taiwanese based such as AOpen, Gigabyte, and Sparkle to name a few.

FYI, the x700 pro isn't supposed to compete with the 6600GT, here's how it stands thus far.

6600GT > or = X700XT

6600 < X700, X700 Pro

I'm actually looking into getting either a 6600GT, or an X700 Pro, I just think the X700 Pro's price is just right :)

Actually, is their any proof of the X700 PRo and X700 XT speeds? Since the PRO has a lower clock speed, but twice the memory, I thought it might actually run faster in some programs.

Anyone know?

Man I am having a problem with the AOPEN 6600GT too!!! I've bought two and they both did the same thing on a SHuttle SB83G5 =( bastards!

edit: Oh yeah and I also got both of my fried cards from mwave! This is the only 6600GT PCI-E manufacturer they have.

Do PCI-e mobos require the 24 pin PSU? the extra 4 pins is what supplies the proper voltage to the PCI-x slot for video cards. the motherboard may have come with an adapter for a 20 pin to 24 pin, but I have heard that this does not cut it. Stability issues occur. When a true good quality (of course) PSU that is PCI-E ready (24 pin power connector), stability was acheived. Hope this helps.

Dimension 8400 Power Supply pretty much is pci-e,sata ready with all the proper connectors...NO ADAPTERS NEEDED!!!

FedEx dropped off the Chaintech 6600GT this morning.

Dropped tha puppy in the 8400....Loaded OEM Drivers(66.32.s)....Ran 3dmark03 7958@default clock speeds No driver tweaking....Factory defaults

Bumped her up to 560\1.12 just to see 8660

Lookis like the Chaintech 6600GT is a winner!!!

Just got home from work a little while ago....Gonna have to do some stress testing on it NOW!!!

I'll lwt ya know how it works out.

Gonna have to check for newer drivers?
