I've upgrade from a 9800 Pro to a 6600GT PCIe. I'm very happy and play many games including Doom3, HL2, etc....

Ok, here a set of benches that gives a much more clear picture of the various cards:

As you can see, the 6600gt has a slight lead over the 9800pro in most games, however it does not blow the 9800pro out of the water, and I would not waste money on a 6600gt if I already have a 9800pro. If you want a real upgrade, then get a 6800gt or x800xl.

9700 Pro
8 pixel pipelines
4 vertex pipelines
256 bit memory path
19.4 GB/sec peak memory bandwidth

6600GT
8 pixel pipelines
4 vertex pipelines
128 bit memory path
16GB/sec peak memory bandwidth

X800XL
16 pixel pipelines
6 parallel vertex pipelines
256 bit memory interface
32GB/sec peak memory bandwidth

6800GT
16 pixel pipelines
6 parallel vertex pipelines
256 bit memory interface
32GB/sec peak memory bandwidth

I wouldn't recommend replacing a 9700/9800 Pro with anything less than a 16 pipe 6800GT or X800XL.

You can't judge a video cards performance using specifications, going by yours the 9700 pro should beat a 6600 gt which it clearly does NOT. Have you ever owned a 9700 pro or 6600 gt? I have owned both and the 6600 gt is a great upgrade from a 9700 pro! :)

Creig, Its not all about clock speeds and bandwidth, the 6600 range has dx9c and p.s 3.0 and hdr and will have a working PvP.

Id take them functions over few mhz and fps, if i had to buy a 6600 range card but i dont have a 6000 range card, id rather as i stated have the newer extentions.

Yes its clocks may be same as a 2 year old "other" card, but its tech is newer than any ATI even the top models today.

All im saying is try and get what you can squeeze your budget to or wait on new cards soon, yes they will cost more but you can then get one these current cards for less, may get you a 6800 or 6800 Gt at decent price, possible may-end of june at latest.

If you look at the benchmarks here you will see that with a 3000+ Clawhammer, a 6600GT managed to get a whopping 44 FPS in Far Cry at 800x600 with NO AA and only 2xAF which quickly dropped to 34 FPS at 1024x768 and 22 FPS at 1280x1024. Who's going to want to run their display at 800x600 with no AA and barely playable framerates just to be able to turn HDR on? Nobody I know. So it's a feature that's completely unuseable on a 6600GT in real world applications. And PS2.0 can do nearly everything PS3.0 can. PvP is obviously an Nvidia-only feature, but whether or not PvP even matters to the OP is another thing.

I never claimed a 9700 Pro is faster than a 6600GT. All I said was that the performance of a $180 6600GT is too uncomfortably close to that of a 9700 Pro to consider it a worthwhile upgrade for the amount of money involved. Moving up to a $280 X800XL would give the OP a much higher performance return on his investment.

Never said you did claim anything was faster ;)

Just saying id take a drop in fps if it was still palyable to get newer tech on screen.

If you want to play them kinda games you dont buy a cheap bottom of range card BTW.

A 6000 or 6000GT does little for me.
