I had the vid card installed using older drivers (66.93) on winxp sp2 and seemed to be working correctly. I tried upgrading to the new 70 series drivers and the new 71.89 WHQL drivers and I get wierd corruption on my desktop and with certain icons and menus. For example most of my icons are discolored, disfigured and smeared. When i open and minimze my browser i am left with this as my desktop.

I formatted and reinstalled winXP and the installed the latest offical nvidia drivers and i still have the same problem. Any ideas as to what is causing this ???

Are you overclocking? Did you uninstall the old driver before upgrading to the new driver?

Another guy had similar problem here, not sure if it's the same but your description is worded almost exactly like his

Nope I am not overclocking, I uninstalled the older driver 1st and then used driver cleaner. That didnt work, I formatted and reinstalled my OS and then installed the latest offical driver.

I still have the same problem

doesn't matter, a fresh install should wipe that out. Maybe the driver doesn't work well with your setup for some reason. After a fresh XP install, you should install the known working version (66.93)and make sure you get good video. Download the 78.14, uninstall the 66.93 drivers though windows' "add/remove"; reboot and install the 78.14. If this works, try the same method to upgrade to the next driver.

What motherboard do you have?
I know some SIS boards have issues with Nvidia 6 series cards right now.
Even if you don't have a SIS, did you install your motherboard drivers before installing the Nvidia video card drivers?

Is the power connector on the video card plugged in?
Are other devices on the same rail?
The card, even a 6600, should have nothing on the same rail. Well, maybe one fan or two but that's it. No hard drives, CD drives, etc. should be plugged into the other connectors that share the same wires as the connector going into the 6600.

Lemodular2, upgrading the driver from an older version produces this problem, even after usinstalling from add\remove programs, rebooting, using driver cleaner, rebooting and installing the latest official driver. I also had this problem with the previous offical 71.XX series driver.

PG, I have an Asus A7V (via chipset) motherboard using the latest bios. The video card is not sharing power with any other devices. The 1st thing i did after the XP install completed was to install my vid card drivers. I did not install any other drivers

So things work OK with driver 66.93? Which 6600GT do you have - is there an upgrade for the BIOS?

I have the XFX 6600GT and just went from the XG 71.84's to Official 71.89's without issue. Did a throw&go i.e. no drivercleaner or anything else, just disabled the A/V and ran the installer. MOV, DF:BHD, FarCry, SC:CT all play perfectly and no video issues to speak of on a Via K8T800 based dual Opteron board. I don't use syntheitics for my system anymore so I have no idea what 3DM, AQM3, or any other such thing does with these.

I have an XFX 6600GT, everything seems to work ok with the 66.93 drivers. There is no bios upgrade for the card. I will try it on a friend's PC and see if I can reproduce the issue. If so, I am going to RMA the card

I belive there is a thread in this forum or guru3d about issues with the VIA chipsets. Someone suggested to install the latest VIA 4in1. Try the card in a non-VIA MB and see if this is true. If I find the thread, I'll post it here.

I had the opposite problem. My 6600GT would not run properly in my old NForce1 motherboard, but works fine in my son's cheapo VIA motherboard, so I had to swap motherboards with him.

An update to my problem. When I change resolutions some of the funky looking icons in my start menu get better, while when i enter Add\Remove programs the back ground is pink. If i try to change display properties, some of the images in there overlap eachother and garbled. If i try to take a screen shot and paste it into paint, it comes out like the image in my 1st post, it does not look like what i see on screen.

Seems this is an issue that a few others are having as well
