6600 vs 6600 GT

Hi there,

I'm looking into buying a new PCI Express Graphics card and look like the 6600 is the best value for money, however i am confused between the difference of a 6600 and a 6600GT

Can someone please explain the difference in performance,.

I dont want to SLI the cards so thats not an issue for me.

6600 GT

500mhz core speed with 8pixel pipes and 3 vertex shaders, the memory uses a 128bit bus and is GDDR3 stuff running at 500Mhz (1000Mhz effective)

the plain 6600

much slower core at 300Mhz (i think), still ahs 8 pipes and 3 vertex shaders. again 128bit bus but this time much slower ram in the form of standard DDR (in a TSOP package) usual max speed for this is 300mhz (600 effective)

both cards have the same features, SM3, HDR and all that jazz, but neither are really strong enough to utilize them.

the 6600GT will be the faster card for sure

I see the 6600 GT and the 6800 regular at almost the same price, How is the 6800 better?

6600GT: 8 (pipelines) * 500 (mhz clockspeed) = 4000

6800: 12 (pipelines) * 325 (mhz clockspeed) = 4200

as you can see, there is minimal core speed performance difference, now onto the memory.

6600GT: 128 (bit memory interface) * 500 (mhz mem speed) = 64,000

6800: 256 (bit memory interface) * 600 (mhz mem speed) = 153,600

this is best-case-senario of course, but normally the memory speed isn't that drastically different.

Close: The 6600GT is indeed 500 MHz core/500 MHz memory (it's DDR so it works out to 1000 MHz DDR).

The 6800 is 325 Mhz core / 350 Mhz memory (700 Mhz DDR)

So:

6600GT: 128 bit memory interface * 500 = 64,000
6800: 256-bit memory interface * 350 = 89,600

basically, the 6800 does still have 40% more memory bandwidth (which doesn't help it tremendously as the core is similar); your error made it look like it had more than double the bandwidth ;) .
