first i wanted an xl...then i thought "well for 100 less i can get a card that won't last long(6600gt), but i can use that 100 to get a better card in a year or two" now i'm thinking that i could get a 6600 vanilla and use that extra 140 that an xl would normally cost for a new card in a year or so. can the vanilla play games like doom 3 at 10x7? can this card be overclocked to gt speeds (memory too)? finally...which company seems to overclock better or just be generally more reliable for graphics cards. (my first computer) i'm really liking the asus 6600 vanilla because it has no fan :)

i'll narrow it down to one question. can the 6600 vanilla be overclocked to be the exact same speed as a gt?

On the core, maybe, but on the RAM? Almost certainly not.
If you get the Asus with no fan, heat could be an issue if you do try and overclock.

Lonyo is right.
The 6600 core can be clocked pretty well, but the GT comes with DDR3 while the vanila 6600 comes with regular DDR mem.

Check your PM.

Also, a 6600 has half the working pipelines, 128 bit memory, and less vertex shaders, it would be considerably slower even at the same clockspeed.

Er, no.
6200 has half the pipes.
Both the 6600 and 6600GT have a 128-bit memory bus, and I dunno about the vertex shaders.

For starters, the 6200 features half the pixel pipes of the 6600, and 1/4 that of the 6800. Next, the 6200 will be available in two versions: one with a 128-bit memory bus like the 6600 and one with a 64-bit memory bus, effectively cutting memory bandwidth in half. Finally, NVIDIA cut the core clock on the 6200 down to 300MHz as the final guarantee that it would not cannibalize sales of their more expensive cards.
While the 6600GT received all the attention, the regular 6600 will find its way into more computers, thanks to lower prices. Specification-wise, the 6600 is identical to the 6600GT. It's still an 8-pipe 128-bit design, but as you can guess, it runs at much lower clock speeds

Also: For 6600GT overclocking reference:
Anandtech Retail 6600[b
Might give an indication of how the core might clock. The RAM will obviously be a lot more limited though.

My mistake, was thinking 6800GT, not 6600GT.

Vicodin + no sleep = nonsensical posting ><

I owned both the vanilla and the GT, and the difference in performance difference is day and night. You can overclock the core like mad, but without the memory overclock, it is absolutely of no use. The memory chips used in the vanilla are extremely high latency, like 6ns compared to 1.6ns you could get with the GT. You will get good 3Dmk05 scores, but the games will stutter when it comes to AA/AF etc.
