Hi, just want to know if there are any significant differences between an AGP and PCI-E version of 6600GT.

I am currently deciding whether to go for a PCI-E mobo or AGP mobo.

Another question, would you guys go for a X700 Pro 256mb or a 6600GT 128mb??? I saw the charts, seems they are at par without AA/AF. But, i have the impression that X700 Pro 256mb will last longer than the latter. What do you think guys?

There are no performance differences, but if your buying a new board, you should go PCI-E, where the 6600GT orices are better. The 256B of RAM won't be that much of an advantage for the X-700Pro, at least from what I've seen.

ok then, ill go for a 6600GT PCI-E version... any suggestion on what mobo has the best PCI-E setup?

Can anyone explain to me, in simlpest layman terms, the diff between PCI-E and AGP??

There really is no way to compare the two. PCI-E is simply a completely different standard than AGP. Uses a different interconnect, different speed and everything.

The best PCI-E setup. I assume you mean SLI capable in which case i would highly recommend the DFI NF4-SLI. If you have an endless supply of money the Tyan K8WE is like a gamers dream (not sure about OCing though as it is a server board).

No SLI.. i mean i dont need SLI. And i am on a tight budget. Just a max of $130 for mobo.

another thing, im looking at inno3d 6600GT, because its a lot cheaper. Anyone has bad experience regarding this brand, pls share!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that PCIe 6600GTs are clocked at 500/1000 but most AGP 6600GTs are clocked at 500/900 (mine is, although some are clocked by default to 500/1000). Not to mention my AGP 6600GT overclocks like crap. But since it looks like you're building a completely new system, PCIe is the way to go.

The only real difference between the different manufactors of cards is the type of cooling they use. Performance-wise they're all the exact same.

Edit: Except maybe the BFG and XFX 6600GT's. I know for a fact the the BFG has a GPU clocked at 525mhz compared to 500mhz.

hi... its too late... i bought my new system... no more regrets!!!

this is the system i bought... reassure me pls, tell me i did the right thing!!!
Athlon 64 3000+ S939
MSI k8neo2 platinum nforce3 S939
Inno3d 6600GT agp
1gb generic DDR400
Generic casing with 4 fans (question, what direction should the four fans be facing?)
TASK TK945TX-DF 450W Blue dual BB crystal fan w/blue led (is this enuf?)
Seagate 120gb 7200rpm SATA

question guys, i have 2 auxillary fans at the back of casing, 1 on the side, and one in front. what should be the airflow? im thinking of 2 fans (side and front) blowing into the mobo, while 2 fans (at the back) for exhaust...

well, building a new system I definitely would have gone PCI-Express. It's not like AGP will kill you anyways though, so happy gaming!

oh god... i know. i shouldve gone PCI-E... but no stock at that time... but i also think that AGP will still live a long way before PCI-E become the common ly used GPU slot... and AGP has a large share of the market.

anyother reassurance?

this is still a decent gaming setup, though not much future proofed but this is already an "able" gaming system, imo...

dont worry about being "future proof", its a solid rig and the price : Performance seems to be solid as well.

AGP's got some life left in her yet. ; )

in the future though dont be so hasty, if you know what you want and its sold out dont just order something else, there are other webstores and stuff comes back into stock. get what you want, dont just settle so you wont have to wait anouther week. plus ask questions about brands before you buy the stuff, not after.

all 6600gts are pretty much the same, only difference is what the heatsink looks like.

ive never used inno3d but ive never heard anything bad about them.

its a good setup though, enjoy gaming on your PC!

agp will be around for a long while, and it still has the same 4x performance of pci-e that games might use. very few use 8x and none use 16x.
