Many (including benchmarks) have said that the 6600GT is a very good middle-end gaming card, but there are also many that have heating issues with this card. So Really, is the 6600GT really that great, do the positives outweigh the negatives?

heating issues? get a 6800 or x800. the $40 is worth it. don't get anything more than a plain x800 or 6800 bc its just stupid. the next gen x900 vanilla will be better than an x850xtpe for probably 200-250.

The best card out there right now for pure price/performance is the X800XL IMO.

Well in australia the cheapest 6600GT sells for $235 the next best thing is a 6800 or X800 that both sell for $350-$400 Soooo when you look at it from a price point ... if a 6600GT is faster then a 9800 Pro/XT then its well worth the money.

I dont know about America .. but in Aus its the price that makes it shine ... the closest thing ATI's got to compete are 9800Pro's and X700Pro's for $300 No contest.

I think the 7600GT will be a nice card if they ever make one.

I have a Leadtek 6600GT and its very solid on the latest games like HL2 and BF2...good framerates and I don't seem to have any heat problems...but if you want to save money now from upgrading later go for a 256MB card like what others mentioned X800XL or 6800GT...I got the 6600GT cuz I was on a strict budget

Hey videoclone u a fellow aussie?

I feel the high end graphics card in Australia is marked up heaps. I shop around and get the green guide (computer hardware newspaper) and the prices are very similar and some shops dont have decent 6800 or x800 range. I bought my computer from Computer Parts Land and I'm happy with it. They one of only stores in Melbourne that have decent parts range like antec, zalman powersupply and high end video cards.
CPL website
I remember for my old computer 4 years ago a female sales assistant told me geforce 2 mx was good enough. I ignored any advice she gave.

I havent seen any new 6800gt for AUD$350-400. I've seen x800 pro for about $360 but only 12 pipelines. On Ebay x800pro for $300 new but eventhough I use Ebay alot I dont really trust warranty return policy for expensive computer parts. I still see regularly leadtek or msi 6800gt going for ~$500-$550 AUD in stores.

Its frustrating when I see all these posts in US saying they got x800xl for US$250 or US$280 for 6800gt, and when u convert $280 / 0.76 exchange rate = AUD$370 yet stores here sell same card for $550. Thats like 40% markup.

If you're looking at the 6600GT, I'd recommend getting a Radeon X800 instead. There are a couple for sale right now on Ebay for $120 + $15 shipping. These are PCI-E, 128MB OEM cards.

6600GT has a little heatsink issue. If you press on the heatsink with enough pressure, could be a small amount, the heatsink could break contact with the GPU and all hell breaks loose. So if you get one, get one from a good brand like eVGA or something and don't touch the heatsink.
