The welfare queens strawman again? C'mon. There are much bigger bioethics issues at work here, anyway.

Having kids at such an old age is an unbelievably selfish thing to do.

A) I at least hope that the government provided no funding for this whatsoever.
B) More generally, we need to regulate reproduction more. I don't have a problem with China's one-child policy. The regulations must be applied equally though.

As a physician, I am concerned that we have not established some clear guidelines of ethics that could prevent this, as well as these multiple births that IMO are purly for publicity.

66 y/o primagravida via Invitro

Agreed. However, how could you draw up "clear" guidelines? Seems that there would be a huge gray area for 40-somethings.

I think it's fair to say that she was overly optimistic that she'd live to a ripe old age and was perhaps too fixated on breaking the age record for giving birth :(

If there is and with wishes like that, you may be in for a surprise.

Those who propose ethical guidelines for science or medicine are the subject of ridicule in our society. Whether we can do something has become the only question people care about, whereas whether we should do it is probably a much more important question. However, whether we should is also an even harder question than whether we can.

Hm.. she spent her entire life caring for her mother, and when her mother died, she wanted a life of her own, part of which involved her becoming a mother herself. Don't you guys think you are being a bit harsh? Sure it wasn't the wisest thing to do and I feel it for the kids, but still.

Sympathy is something we rarely see here. But I think your right, we cannot blame the woman to much, she might have had a serious emotional need. I really blame the docs for allowing her to do something so foolhardy.

I feel sympathetic for the kids since they're in the current situation without a mother, but any sympathy I have toward the mother is lessened by the fact that she knowingly lied to her doctors in order to have a family, AND she sacrificed by selling her house in order to do so.

i have sympathy for the kids. they didnt choose the situation they are in. only good part is they are to young to remember the old bitch adn thats good. they will devolop a bond with whoever gets them (didnt see it in the story but may have missed it).

so she took care of her mother and for some odd reason couldnt get out and find a husband and have kids. SO FUCKING WHAT? it does not change the fact at 66 having kids was a greedy and fuckign selfish thing to do. She had no thought about if she would be around to take care of them.
