$650 Game Rig Challenge

OK...

Some buds and I have come to the realization that upgrades are eminent for us. Soooo, we decided to make it a fairly inexpensive competition.

-Maximum $650:thumbsup:
-Current rigs{tower + components only} cannot be upgraded (we all know what each other has)😉
-Each rig has to contain an optical drive (floppy is your option)
-Overclocking is optional for each person

After laying down these rules, it looked more like a sign-up for a "Win free gas for a year" comps rather than friends trying to outdo one another.

Anyway, I have been looking at the Opteron 144 or 146 Venus and was thinking on building around it and maybe a x800 GTO card.

Whats your thoughts?

Antec Case with 400watt PSU
Epox EP+9NPA+Ultra
Opteron 146
2x 512MB G. SKILL Value RAM
XFX 6600GT
Hitachi 160GB HDD
$30 CD/DVD Drive

That's about $650 😀

Antec Sonata II (Newegg)- $80 (After $20 rebate)
Retail 3000+ (MWave) - $139
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB (Newegg) - $77
EPoX EP-9NPAJ (MWave) - $64
OCZ Value RAM 2x512 (Newegg) - 71.50 (After $10 rebate)
Lite-on CD Burner/DVD drive (Newegg) - $29
Saphire X800 GTO (Newegg) - $185

Total: $645.50

Best game rig for under $650? Easy, XBox 360. No doubt the best gaming machine for under $650. You'll even have money left over for games. 🙂

6800GS is much better for the price.

I'll have to  your opinion.

The x800GTO FIREBLADE for $178 dollars can overclock to much higher speeds than the 6800GS for $205 dollars.

I agree save some $$

1. Opteron 144 = $150
2. Used from FORSALE = Thread DFI Lanparty ULTRA D = $85
3. 1GB PQI Turbo PC4000 = $100AR
4. 7800GT + Ultra Infinity 600Watts + COD2 = $299 (from HOT Deals)Link
5. 100GB SATA Hard Drive = FREE (HOT DEALS)Link
6. Computer case = $9.99 Link

Total = $644

I am ready for Critics 😀

Oh don;t forget to swap the power supply which comes with the case with Ulta Infinity 600Watts.

Great build, but the hd deal is dead 🙁

The reason I wen with the GTO over the 6800GS is I was trying to keep it umder $650, as that was the rule.

For kamranziadar, I don't think used parts can be considered. Way too much variance there.
Also, I wouldn't put an Ultra PSU next to my PC, let alone in it. Plus, considering the odds that you will actually get any rebate from TD is a 50/50 shot at best, probably shouldn't use the AR price for that bundle. 🙂

Not retail I'm afraid. On the other hand, the person who included the link to the $125 OEM model might get the fabulous $5 prize anyways. That's really cheap and will save me a good amount since I'm buying a Scyth Ninja anyways. Anyone have any thoughts about quality (especially overclocking ability of OEM vs Retail Opterons)?

Should OC the same. I don't own one but I think stepping E can get 2.4 with stock HSF

Sorry about hijacking tread.

PS put $5 in a charity bucket for Christmas others need it much more that we do.

Hows $125.00 Even if it is OEM I'm sure you can pick up HSF for less than $25.
Instock

Looks like the link is now dead. I'm trying to find an Opty 144 or 146 now and I've gone through 10+ vendors with NO ONE having the 146's available for under $200. ZZF has it back in stock ... at an increased price of $238 !!!! OUCH !

Looks like that site is having roblems in general. I went to the main page and then"Components" and still get an error.
