Well we know now how they will bridge the long wait to Zen4 on AM5 Q4 2022.
Production start for V-cache is end this year so too early for Zen4 so this is certainly coming to AM4.
+15% Lisa said is "like an entire architectural generation"

5800X3D is AM4 swan song. I might upgrade (probably not) from my 5600X.
I'd still be a nice upgrade, free of any mobo/RAM cost but int the end, my 1060GTX is a lot more prone to replacement ASAP.

If you want 64GB RAM or more at a good price, the 5800X3D should be good for you for at least 3 years or so before you feel the need to upgrade, assuming the V-cache is useful in your workloads. Otherwise, better to wait for AM5.

I have 2 5800X rigs, one is a daily, the other is strict gaming. The daily will be good for a long while and I'll probably just do NVMe drive updates and use the "smaller" 1TB NVMe drives in external enclosures. The only other thing the daily rig could use is a new PSU. I bought a nice Prime 1000w Tx that I'll use in it one day: it's been sitting for months now and thankfully it doesn't use capacitors on the 24p and GPU cables. Actually it doesn't use any in-line capacitors at all VS my SuperNova T2 that uses them on the GPU cables and 24p ATX. But yeah the 3D should be a nice upgrade until the pain of AM5 hits

I'm interested in knowing how many people here are holding out on an upgrade due to waiting for the 5800X3D. Please raise your hands.

I was but at this point, even if the performance is good for games I still have a hard time paying $350-400 for an 8core cpu these days, no matter who makes it. Longevity wise the 12 or 16 core is probably better investment especially if the used market acts like it did with the i7 chips for the past ten years.

If the 5800X3D can somehow do 2000+ ST in Geekbench 5 or has at least one useful workload where it beats everything in sight, I might go for that.

I doubt you will see 2000+ ST in Geekbench 5 just from extra cache.

And for me that one synthetic benchmark isn't all that useful i'm looking forward to seeing numbers across applications and games.

Thanks. I had never checked 5800X's score before. It's close to the best score I've seen from i5-12400 so far (1743) so if it performs well in general, I can see myself going for it. With PBO, I suppose it can go into the 1800s?

EDIT: Wait, max frequency of 5.02 Ghz means it's running with PBO?

If MSI release a Zen 3 BIOS for my B350m Mortar then I will buy a 5800X3D to replace my 2200G. If price is right I might get a B550 board anyway though.

yes PBO is on.

I am so hyped for this CPU! I am anxious about not being able to buy one due to high demand and low supply. I am going to try building a 'budget' 5800X3D build, but I will not buy a single part unless I can snag this CPU first. I love big cache!

Hey, I own the i7-5775C too. I actually want to get another one just to OC the shit out of it :D

-I've bounced around the idea of an AMD build here for a while, and I would have gotten a 5800x or the 3d version, but honestly it's GPU prices that are holding me back.

What's the point of upgrading my whole core rig if I'm still going to be stuck with a 980Ti? Might be a couple years yet before GPU pricing becomes even sort of sane again, by then my "new" rig would start getting old and I would not have even seen the fruits of the upgrade yet.

It is an easy decision for me, even though I will be stuck on the 1080 ti for the foreseeable future. It is all due to the games we play. The majority of games I play are 100% CPU bound even at 4k60 or 1440p144. I will also be using the 5800X3D to host these games for coop, so I will be running all the AI on that system. My Ryzen 5000 friends already get double my framerate in these games, so I know I'm gonna see a huge performance uplift.

But for games that I am GPU limited in, I will see no change at all. I am definitely going to wait for a GPU supporting DisplayPort 2.0 in the meantime. Hopefully by the time that happens, 4k144 will be more mainstream!

Thank you for the reply!! SO I know that this will be better at gaming but what about video editing and compression vs say a 5950x??
Almost all rendering and compression workloads are more core/thread limited than they are cache/memory limited, either way its safe to say the 5950x will have a clear performance advantage in highly threaded workloads. Without having benchmarks of the 5800x3d yet, the best way to extrapolate is looking at memory performance scaling benchmarks. Any program that likes having faster/lower latency ram should really like v-cache.

Why wouldn't AMD just release some dang info on the 5800x3d so people like me who are interested in either purchasing this or a 5950x and need to know benchmarks..

I have a feeling that it isn't that impressive in most stuff other than games. Strong application performance is not something AMD would be shy to share.

They will, once you can actually buy the 5800X3D. But if you do tasks that can use more than 8 cores, the 5950X will be faster if not then the the 5800X3D will be fastest.
