I'm sure this has been discussed already, but I couldn't find a thread on it.

I'm wondering if there is really much advantage to getting a 128mb card over a 64mb version? I play some pretty demanding games like morrowind and ms flight sim 2002. Would I even be able to notice a difference?

The extra memory will not help with performance if the card is not fast enough.

Let's assume FS2002 runs poorly on your current system with a GF4 Ti4200 64mb video card. Getting a GF4 Ti4200 128mb is not really going to improve running said game on your system. The only SIGNIFICANT gains you will see would be upgrading your system as needed (CPU, RAM, video card, etc.)

However, having an extra 64mb of onboard vRAM does help some. If it were me, I'd probably just pay a little more and get a 128mb card if possible.

Are you having problems in FS2002?

I currently have a geforce2 gts so....fs2002 runs but not that great. I was just wondering if there were documented performance gains for it when running with a 128mb card...

other system specs:
athlon xp 1600+
17" monitor (so high res isn't that cricital)

Well, you can see from the peformance test of the AT link you gave above, that the 64mb and 128mb versions are nearly identical in speed. I'd just say its a matter of preference, but the extra 128mb certainly can't hurt. :)

If you wanna play doom3 it will probly make all the difference :) future games will have bigger than 64mb scenes, but 128 is fine for a long time.

I think it will only make a difference in future games if you are planning on playing anything above 1024x768. For current games.....I still can't justisfy the extra 64mb unless you are playing at ultra high resolution(which you will only see a small difference between the 64mb vs 128mb). I think 64mb vs 128mb has to do alot with what resolution you play your games.

128 MB VRAM makes a huge difference in today's games, even when running at medium resolutions. You should definitely pick up a 128 MB card over a 64 MB card.

Getting a GF4 Ti4200 128mb is not really going to improve running said game on your system.
That depends on whether the game is running poorly because its exceeding the 64 MB VRAM on the current card. If it is then you'll most definitely see a difference.

This has been discussed in many different threads. If you go by the benchmarks they show a very small difference in performance from a 64MB card to a 128MB version.

The benchmarks are full of it.

I have owned and thoroughly tested Radeon 8500's, 9500's and GF4 Ti 4200's in both the 64MB and 128MB versions. Just get out your Unreal Tournament and play a practice session of Domination in Condemned at 1600 x 1200. Set up 16 bots at the godlike level. Watch the minimum framerates (not average) and you will see the 128MB versions often running 15-20fps higher in the most challenging action scenes. And this is an older game, I am sure some of the newer more complex games might make an even bigger difference.
