I have an A-Data 64GB Sandforce 1222 drive on it's way to me from Newegg, before I even saw this thread. Going to try out an SSD.

Is there a pretty good chance 128GB drives will be this low by the end of the year? I thought I heard there was a massive price drop suspected.

I haven't been closely following the SSD market. Is there a simple answer as to which of the SDDs mentioned in the OP is best?

I would go with the Sandforce controller out of the four (AData). The Samsung is the wildcard here, it's newer and I haven't seen any professional reviews of it yet.

Crucial (Marvell controller) also makes a very fast drive - faster reads than the Sandforce - but it's price is $134, has slower write speeds and requires SATA 6Gbps in order to show off it's high read speeds. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148357

Usually when the new technology is released, the older technology cost is reduced. I wouldn't be surprised to see 128gb SSD's come down ~$40 or so. That's when I'll make the transition - 64gb is a bit too small for my desktop pc needs

Unless you double up and do RAID 0 which is what I'm considering
For those who are SSD virgins...you WILL be amazed.
Make sure to adjust your mobo to AHCI before you install your OS

Nice Deals

I forgot what it is you need AHCI for with SSD drives (TRIM?), but does the generic AHCI driver in Win7 OS support these more advanced features? Or do you need to be sure to install the AHCI driver from the manufacturer (i.e. Nvidia or Intel)?

I am betting by next year this time even 500MB will be at this price point.

However, that's a whole year to run slow if you don't have too.

I am sticking to my fast SATA drives for now. In laptops I am putting in Momentus XT.

Probably Black Friday or so 2011 I will upgrade.

I think the Windows 7 drivers are fine. Even in SATA IDE emulation mode, you will get TRIM, but the drive runs faster for almost all people when they turn on AHCI. I noticed not just a big jump in benchmark between the two modes, I could also feel the difference. At least with my Intel board and C2D Intel CPU, AHCI is definitely faster. Plus you get full hot-swappable ESATA support with AHCI enabled.

If I upgrade to SSD, do I HAVE to do a OS reinstall? Or can I just do a HDD migration?

Do yourself a favor with a clean install.

Mechanical HDs cloned to SSDs opens your computer to alignment issues and automatic Windows SSD settings that don't transfer.

Ahhhhhhhhh yes. Not aht you mention the issue(s) I recall that from when SSDs first started to gain traction.
Thanks!

You really think 500GB drives will be 100 bucks by this time next year? There is literally zero chance of that happening. Good luck though.

In his defense, he did say 500MB. If you can find a drive that small, it would most likely be under 100 bucks lol

I meant 500GB...I am willing to bet they are going to come way down over the course of the next year and far more commonplace.

only time will tell.
