I'll probably get a couple and change out the drive on my wife's netbook. That thing is a real dog, hopefully the SSD will help speed it up. Even marginally will be an improvement.

Keep in mind the fact that the Kingston v100 is absolutely the slowest of the slow of the SSDs that are currently available. Random read/write speeds will be about one-tenth the speed of a Crucial m4 64 GB.

The Crucial m4 was a Shell Shocker special at NewEgg on Thursday for $99 shipped, no tax. Alternatively, you can get a Crucial C300 at bhphotovideo[dot]com for $105 shipped while supplies last; $200 for the 128 GB. The C300 is being discontinued. It's a little faster than Crucial's m4 on reads, and a little slower on writes.

On the plus side, measured speeds on SSDs don't seem to matter as much in real world performance as one would think.

Help me out guys...

I am wanting to upgrade my parent's laptops to SSDs, mainly due to the heat generated by standard HDDs. They use them mainly to surf or check email, and my mother is addicted to playing online games (cards, puzzles). In other words, they are not advanced users - no 3D gaming, no photo editing, no cd-burning, no movie watching, etc.

Would they likely see any real-world difference between these Kingston SSDNow drives and the Crucial RealSSD's?

I am looking strictly at 64GB models. I am prepared to buy either one, but I just don't have much real-world experience with SSD drives.

Showing 89.99 for me.

edit: Aww fuck, there is a MIR that wasn't mentioned in the OP. Usually costco submits them for you, but this one isn't submitted by costco. MIR kinda kills it for me, still cheaper than anywhere else though.

Yeah, I was going to pounce on this with no mail in rebates...but it just isn't hot enough with them to get me to buy something I don't really need right now.

They would need to be the + series to make the deal MUCH better. If I add in tax, these come to around the same price for faster drives on ebay.

Bump for my question 4 posts above. I am upgrading my parents to an SSD. Wondering if this Kingston would work just as good as the Crucial RealSSD. Not sure if they would see a difference between the two for the kind of things they use the laptop for.

If they were the V+ series, then they wouldn't have a low price at Costco. The price at Costco for current electronics is almost always higher than at NewEgg or Amazon. The Costco advantage is the safety factor from having a 90 day return period on opened electronics, with a 100% full refund and no questions asked.

Personally, I think the performance/price ratio on the v100 is unfavorable even at $65. Here's a quote from Kingston in response to a one egg rating on NewEgg for this exact product (64 GB v100 bundled with an external enclosure):

"Dear Valued Customer, We have discovered a technical issue with our SSDNow V100 which could result in drive failure. While we have observed this issue in only a small percentage of drives, Kingston strongly recommends that a new firmware update D110225a be applied to all V100 drives to prevent possible failure. Please open attached link for upgrade instructions.
NEW Firmware - D110225a
OLD Firmware - D100811a"

The firmware version should be printed on the label. Make damn sure you're not getting a close-out on a drive with the old firmware. If you do, return it for a full refund or upgrade the firmware immediately.

would be fine, but only if win7 since only the + does it's own garbage collection... i've put these in a couple machines (laptop and desktop) and they are plenty fast for normal people... makes old laptop feel like a new box... makes quad cpu feel as fasst as it's supposed to...

I have one, it makes an old Core 2 Duo system seems snappier than it does on a Newer Core system, at least from my experience. It'd be worth it if you want to add some new life in an older system running Win7. If you have a more current rig it's better to go with a higher performing SSD (stating the obvious)

WaTaGuMp, I am appropriately impressed by your economy of words! :D

Seriously, you might be interested to know that NewEgg has an e-blast today for a 96GB V+100 (not the crummy V100 that we've been talking about) for $110. There is an additional $10 MIR, but I don't take MIRs into account.

I pulled the plug on a Samsung 470 128gb a few weeks ago. Found one from an online store for $180 shipped. The only problem was, they didn't have them in stock and didn't say that. When the drive never shipped and the guy couldn't give me an answer on when he was getting them in stock, I cancelled the order. So karma was telling me its not the right time for an SSD. I will wait till prices drop even more and they become more reliable. My email to the place was quite nasty, using some choice words. :D

Rebate is good for 2 driver...I'd still do this if I could get 3 or 4...even though slower driver, 4 in raid 0 would be nice and speedy :)

What?
A hard drive only pulls ~10W. 10W ain't jack for heat.

If you've got heat issues make sure the computer is throttling the CPU at idle. (CPU-Z will tell you what frequency you're running at.)

It's common for people to put their power settings to Home/Office Desk or Performance, which shuts off throttling.

Did you try your Samsung again afterwards? I have this SSD and when I first installed it I didn't think much about it but when I went back to my WD Black I definitely could tell the difference.
