64bit Java for Windows x64 (Vista or XP)?

Browsing through the website the normal way, you find a "Windows" version that doesn't say if it's 32-bit specific of not, while the Linux versions are differentiated. I googled to see if there was 64bit support and find what seems like hackish ways to install a 64bit version that involve the JDK. I just want 64-bit JRE with the 64-bit JVM.

Google hasn't helped much, but I got more than I could get by browsing through their website the normal way:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0...nstall-windows-64.html
This URL has a link for installing the JRE for all 64bit Windows (Server, XP, Vista, etc). The link just tells me to download a file and does not give me a source to download it from.

Sun's download web pages have always sucked. 🙂
So I can't (literally) paste the link.
Start here
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281
Go here "JDK 6 Update 5" -> DOWNLOAD
Scroll way down past where the windows section on the top ends where you'd think they'd have this listed... and find...
Windows x64 Platform - Java SE Development Kit 6 Update 5
Download Now! Windows x64 executable jdk-6u5-windows-x64.exe 38.91 MB

AFAIK same for the JRE.

I'm not sure if they fixed the issue about no 64 bit plugin for browsers yet... Then again neither has Adobe's Flash nor RealPlayer... gotta love how people keep up with the times and aren't ready for 64 bit OSs that have been out for like 10 years.....

The x64 Windows version is at the very bottom. However, as far as I know there are zero advantages in running 64-bit JRE unless you are a developer. But in that case you'd probably want the JDK instead. I do not believe the 64-bit version of the JRE contains a browser plugin, so you would be unable to view java content in websites. Use the regular 32-bit JRE, that's what I am doing on my x64 Vista.

The only downside in using 32-bit JRE in x64 XP/Vista is that there has been a bug in JRE where the control panel applet is missing. Sun hasn't bothered to fix this bug even though it has been reported a long time ago. But missing control panel applet really doesn't bother me.
