I have 1 200gig pata 7200 seagate barracuda with 8mb cache. on it I have about 40 gigs free because I have been uninstalling stuff. Time to upgrade
at the egg I can get the WD caviar black 640 for $70 shipped. Or I could spend more and get a spinpoint 1 TB.
This will be my main drive. Is it worth it to get the terrabyte? are they on par performance wise?

My vote would be the Tb, the need for space is growing quickly anymore with all the HD content floating around.

Yes, but cloud computing is getting very popular these days, so all your information will be synced to your online drive somewhere, as broadband usage increases - HD contents will be streamed rather than stored. I think people should learn how to manage their disk content- it's a very good practice, the first thing they should do is get rid of all those porn backups.

Never!

I'd go for the Samsung. For ~$25 you get 360gb, a drive that's not quite as fast, but still faster than almost all conventional drives, and subjectively is quieter.

we should burn the heratic at the stake for even suggesting it!
My porn is all safely stored on my raid6 fileserver (zfs raidz2)

as for the op... how much space do you NEED.
WD recently released their 500GB platter (double sided) tech. So they have a 4 platter 2TB drive, 3 platter 1.5TB drive. and we should expect a 1TB double platter and 500GB single platter (and maybe 250GB single sided platter)...

By reducing platters you reduce heat, temp and noise, and increase performance a good amount too.
Anyone knows if there are rumors for when the 500GB single platter arrives?

Anyways, if waiting is a pain, the 640GB black (or blue if you like silence) use only 2 platters, so they are relatively quiet and fast and low power. the 1TB drives right now are mostly 4 platters, but there are some 3 platters (3x 334GB) out there I think.

I believe the WD 1TB "EADS" model has three platters currently. It is considered a very cool drive with decent performance. $101 at ZZF

I see the WD black WD1001FALS is on sale for $112 shipped. Is that a decent deal over the spinpoint?
I honestly dont know how much storage I will need. I tend to buy and then use until I need new. This one lasted me almost 4 years.

The Samsung 1tb is 3 platter, a lil slower than the 3 platter black though

$70 for a 640GB is great for price/performance and price/GB. Since you are just now filling up a 200GB drive, I would think 640GB would cover you for now. If you start to fill that up, you can always get another drive. By the time that happens, you will get a better price/GB than if you buy extra space now.

Since you are running a PATA drive, do you currently have a setup that can run SATA drives?

yes, I have asus p5q so I can easily run a decent sata drive. Infact it will probably feel like a nice upgrade.
