EDIT: POLL: I am looking for a machine that will run games such as far cry, wolfenstein and various graphic programs. I do want to be able to overclock each as much as i can. I am trying to spend as little as possible, to gain as much bang for the buck as possible. But basically, i still want a great machine i show off with such as benchmarks, etc. I was planning on getting the infamous nf7-s + m2500+ but someone mentioned to instead get one of the cheap A64's, worth it?

I've recently wanted to build a new amd system, and i've looked around and found a good cpu to oc. The Mobile 2500+ and the nf7-s. When i started some new threads about it, alot of people said to get a 64 instead, perhaps a 64 2800+ and a chaintech vnfs3-250. Can anyone give me any links and/or benchmarks showing me why the 64 is superior? for every day use? gaming? if im real going to shell out the bucks, i want to be guaranteed i'll be getting a good performance boost. And if i am going to get the a64 2800+, should i get the 3000? is it worth it?

Here is the info you seek

Here, I'll also help with some analysis:

Based on newegg pricing for the AXP-M 2500+, Sempron 3100+, A64 2800+, A64 3000+ I've come up with these numbers:

AXP-M 2500+ $89 (no HSF)
Doom 3 FPS 55.6

AMD Sempron 3100+ $124 (39.3% price increase)
Doom 3 FPS 75.3 (35.43% performance increase)

AMD Athlon64 2800+ $142 (59.55% price increase)
Doom 3 FPS 78.8 (41.73% performance increase)

AMD Athlon64 3000+ $172 (93.26% price increase)
Doom 3 FPS 85.3 (53.42% performance increase)

Those numbers are based on a non-overclocked desktop XP2500. Since you're OCing, you'll likely hit past 2.2 GHz. I'd expect numbers of at least 70 on that test. Why more might be necessary I don't know, because I think the D3 engine's capped at 60 fps anyway.

I'd assume if he OC's the XP2500, he'll OC the A64 as well
But with an overclocked XP2500+, he'll get slightly higher numbers than the XP3200+ (still below the Sempron 3100+)

Also, the desktop XP 2500+ is slightly faster than the mobile 2500+ (for stock comparision)
(1.83GHz 333FSB vs. 1.866GHz 266FSB for mobile)

That's all valid. I'd still recommend a mobile though, for price and because any numbers above 60 there don't translate into much of a gameplay difference. I'd hold off on the A64 until prices drop even further and the mobile XP simply can't keep up.

Anyway, if you decide on getting an A64, maybe get the 3000+, as its 10 multiplier will make it easier to clock at 3400+ levels than the 2800+ (IIRC that would require something like 260 FSB on a 2800+; I don't think that's very easy).

Corsairpro, thanks for the great link.. in process of reading it over right now. The problem is, that half the people are strong m2500+ supporters, while the other half tell me to get the A64! I just added a poll, please anyone: take a vote, then make a post telling why, if you have it .... do you reccomend it, etc.

If I was going to buy a brand new mobo/cpu combo RIGHT NOW I'd get an A64 system too. I already have a mobile 2500+ on an NF7-S R2 and while it is a sweet computer it is already obsolete. I am hoping it will keep me satisfied until I can get an NF4/S939 A64 rig early next year.

And why does it have to be that Chaintech board? I can't vote in your poll.

Of the 2 I recommended, I'd go for the Soltek. Soltek has a pretty loyal following here at AT, I'm sure others will endorse that board also.

Ok well 81% of the votes say to get the a64, while 70% of the a64 votes say to get the vnfs3-250. 6% say to get the soltek sl-k8, and 24% undecided.
