You don't always need a 64 bit driver. I have yet to run into a problem with a driver running in 32 bit compatibility mode.

Future-proof vs stability, and it MUST be stable as da wife gave me the "not another computer in the house" look when I started the htpc build. (Just wait till she finds out I have to disconnect the simple to use 5 disk dvd changer cause I don't have enough inputs on my av receiver. ; (

Where are you getting this idea? 64 bit Vista is just as well supported as its 32 bit version.

For a new build, with new parts, no reason not to get it.

64 Bit vista has plenty of driver support. I have been using it since the day Vista came out, because manufacturers actually tried to support it, unlike the mess and a half that was known as XPx64

If you are going to use Vista media center x64 then you will have to have 64bit codecs for a lot of video playback... there is a ffdshow 64bit version, but ymmv on how well it works.

I'm going to use 2GB ram and Vista 32bit for mine.

not so for things like ATSC tuner.

Unless you use particular tuner cards 64-bit Vista is a bit wonky for an HTPC. Might check The Green Button, they should have a list of tuners with solid drivers.
