There's very small overlap regions along the main diagonal. Look at the slopes.

Yeah it is a very old trick. If you actually attempt to do this on a piece of cardboard and then cut them up and rearrange it, you will find out that the edges won't align perfectly.

i've seen a similar trick, same solution- its in the diagonals not being completely straight.
