amd athlon 64 3700+ 90nm Rev. E ADA3700BNBOX socket 939

I'm trying to decide whether to buy the box set that includes the fan and heat or to buy the OEM and get my own fan and heatsink.

What do you guys suggest, and if you suggest the OEM, what FAN/HS/Thermal Gel will do the trick for the best price?

If you buy from Monarch you could get the OEM and then pay $15 for a 3 year warranty.

Then you could get what ever Heat Sink you want. I am using a Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra TC. But that because I wanted Silents! This one is not really for Over Clocking I think. The Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra TC cool a little better then the Heat Sink that comes with the CPU and is very Silent!

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought that if you got the retail box, the warranty is void if you use any headsink other than the included one.

I got the XP-90C it's great!

Im sure its good but not the best by any means, well it depends what you like......

xp90 , xp120 both of these are great for overclocking but if stock and noise level isnt a issue
get the box one should be fine i had stock cooler went for a zelman 7700alcu and found out that TT Sonic Tower was the best cooling solution for me....

The stock cooler is fine. AMD isn't a shoestring operation, they have a team of engineers that validate these sorts of things, and the 90nm process chips run fairly cool. You can even use it for a mild OC, but if you plan on squeezing every last drop out of the chip and applying a lot of voltage, an aftermarket sink may be the way to go.

XP-90s are great and let you choose your own levels of noise/performance.

if you are going to spend 50$ more on a new hsf, why not just get a faster chip and your overclock potential using the stock cooler should be about the smae

Not overclocking? Get a retail and use the retail heatsink/fan.
Moderate overclocking? Get a retail and use the retail heatsink/fan.
Serious overclocking? Get an OEM and get a really good heatsink/fan.
