The coldest I've ever bbeen in was -44c. Breathing was certainly possible, but I could feel my nose hairs freezing everytime I inhaled. At those temps you need to have all your skin covered, including your mouth. So the air gets warmed as you inhale.

I wear shorts when it's 0F.
-20F doesn't really affect me, yea I wear gloves and a jacket, but my day to day life is unchanged. I am not too uncomfortable when I go outside.
~ -36F, this is around the coldest I've really experienced (quite a few years ago, I was around 8 or 9 years old, in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin, during a record breaking cold snap. Was outside much of the time building snow forts .... Wind Chill was colder than -70F.) .... I was wearing mittens, snowpants, longjohns, a hat, and the snow fort protected me from the wind .... It wasn't too bad ... but I was dressed for it)
Since then I've seen -30 only a couple of times, and it's never pleasant.

The difference between -81 and -30 is as big of a difference as there is between freezing and -30, or freezing and tropical heat wave weather ....

I'm sure more layers would probably work to keep someone warm in -81, but I would think in that kind of cold, you'd need like, goggles or something for your eyes, and then a full face mask, etc ... no skin left exposed to open air as frostbite could set in really really quickly ....

I went to school in Marquette, MI (on lake superior) and in the 5 years it took me to graduate, they only canceled classes twice. It was two consecutive days where it was -60F.
Wouldn't ya know it, my truck was the only vehicle that would start (out of 4 vehicles) in our house so I had to go out and get the beer. Breathe in through your nose too fast and your nostrils would freeze together!

Hey, NMU! I went to school even further north in Hougthon. I lived an hour south of Marquette the rest of my life till I moved last year.
