62C safe for AMD 1600XP? Also, slow startup.

My AMD 1600XP runs at 67.5C (153.5F) after being on for many hours.

With an 80x80mm case fan taking out air, the CPU temp goes to 62C (143.5F).

My present cpu fan and heatsink must suck really bad, huh? I need a cheap, quiet fan with a good heatsink. Don't want to spend that much. Any ideas, suggestions, etc?

Also, my computer runs pretty slow. WindowsXP takes literally forever to load up. I'm pretty much running a clean install, with few programs being loaded up on startup. I don't think my computer's running this slow just because of the excessively hot CPU temp.

System setup: ASUS A7V333, AMD 1600XP (1.4ghz / 10.5x133mhz), 256mb RAM, 60gb (7200rpm)

What BIOS revision is your A7V333? The earlier BIOSes usually hover in the 60C area, give or take a bit depending on your cooling. Update to the recent BIOS and I bet you'll see a large drop in the temperature estimates... but that's all it is, a placebo to keep people from being worried. :p The real temperature will be what it always has. I do recommend using that 80mm auxiliary exhaust fan from now on.

i don't think cpu's run slow when hot, they just freeze and cause errors.

dreamx coolermaster heatsink is at frys for 9.99

Yeah, expect high temperature estimates with the 1006 BIOS.

The board features Asus Q-Fan, which runs the fan RPM at about 60% (if enabled) and only picks up speed again if the CPU temperature goes over a certain level, which happens to be 60C. So you can consider 60C a very "normal" temperature with the 1006 BIOS. If you update to the 1016 BIOS (or later), you'll probably see that number magically drop to around 45C

Well, I updated the bios to 1018beta, and the CPU temp went from 62C to 60C.

I'll check my manual for the q-fan option/mode.

Actually the Q-fan mode appears to be on automatically. No option in the BIOS. Anyhow, I think my fan and heatsink just stink.

So, the Coolermaster Dream-X heatsink is 10bux. What about a cheap, relatively quiet fan. I'm not looking to buy a Zalman noiseless, just something workable.

My Barton 2500+ is also running at 58-62 C. Much higher than the 45-50 C range I had on my XP1800+. Is it an issue I should look into and maybe reapply the silver paste between the HS and chip? I am not using the stock AMD HS/fan that came with my retail chip, but a glacialtech igloo silent breeze 462 (which I had also used with my previous chip).

my glacialtech igloo silent breeze runs at between 65 and 68 C !!! on my XP2000+ according to the BIOS (epox 8K3a+ board, sorry i don't have the bios revision right this moment), .. but the PC runs smooth as when i had a couple of other "jet-engine" coolers, ..and is fairly quiet to boot. to compare, i previously had a vantec aeroflow which clocked 55-58 C on the same rig. i'd say the BIOS / temp. sensor is inaccurate.

i'd say, don't worry about it, if it isn't giving you any problems and your processor costs less than $50 at the current moment.
