Some of us want a low end cheap DVD player for the lowest price possible. ie. I have a 13" TV on my computer desk. I don't want to spend more than $60 or so for a DVD player for this TV since I have a nice DVD player on my main TV. The oritron is a great deal for this type of situation. It can also play PAL DVD's from Europe and DVD's from other regions too. A $60 price for ANY home DVD player is unheard of and since you get PAL playback and a region free player on top of it it's an amazing deal.

Here's a fairly recent user review I just read. Maybe they are making them a little better now:

Great DVD player for the price. It has menu options to allow Video CD play and also a loophole menu that allows to select ALL regions. The player decodes both PAL and NTSC discs. The DVD200 will play the MATRIX, SIXTH SENSE, INDEPENDANCE DAY, ETC. No problems playing any of these dvds as someone else reported (they must have the DVD100). The picture quality is superb. The DVD200 is compatible with DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 as long as you have a receiver that decodes these. The sound is very good - with some occasional "drop-outs" at chapter stops on some dvds (very rare). The construction of player itself is very sound and equivalent to high end DVD players. Don't get the DVD200 confused with the DVD100. There are alot of problems reported for the DVD100 with playback of some movies (like the MATRIX) and the DVD100 does not have S-Video out. The DVD100 has the same loophole menus. If you are looking for an affordable DVD player, the ORITRON DVD200 is a great deal!

I'm pretty sure almost every DVD player can play audio CD's. I've never heard of one that couldn't.

watchdog: Most DVD players don't have hacks where you can just push buttons on remotes to get special features like region free playback. Only a few that I know of do that like this oritron and the Raite. I happened to find the hacks for the oritron while just doing a search for reviews.

Namlook, I have the Samsung DVD 709/XAA. Are there any "hacks" available for this one?

For those of you asking, I also used to have this Oritron player. It definately isn't for those wanting to experience the full capacity that DVD format offers, but it's not that bad either and certainly worth it at this price. Namlook said it right. It's a good enough player for a small TV or a "not-so-high-end" entertainment system. When I got the Samsung, I gave the oritron to my sister since she doesn't really care about all the DVD "hype" anyway. Either way, it's cheaper than most VCRs, you definately get better quality and you don't have to re-wind a tape.

Luv2chill, I really doubt the menu highlighting problem is due to the player. I might just be the way that movie's menu is made. Try a different movie.

Methos--

Thanks for the reply, but I'm almost positive it is the player. I've tried three different movies (from three different studios) and all exhibit the same problem.

So you said you owned one of these beasts. Yours didn't have any problem like this?

Luv2chill,
Yes, I did have an oritron - I think model#200 since it had the S-video jack and Matrix and the other films listed did play on it. I had no such problem that you are having, with mine. In fact, I think it's a nice first player for anyone who doesn't have a high-end sys. Maybe you just got a bad one.
