If you want a good all around DVD Player which isn't Wal-Mart dirt cheap nor top of the line cutting edge then I really recommend checking out the Toshiba SD1600 for 117.36 after both Mercata and MSN Passport discounts. The Toshiba SD1600 replaces the popular Toshiba SD1200 which replaced the super popular Toshiba SD2109. After reading a lot of reviews I've learned that the Toshiba SD1600 gives you the most bang for your buck quality, performance and features wise.

I think most of us have already made Mercata purchases in the past so we are not eligible for Mercata dollars anymore. They are very strict about it too.

skywhr - For basic DVD movie watching I'm sure that the Oritron is a fine DVD Player, but I would rather have a Honda than a Hyundai, LOL.

$183.36 Toshiba SD1600 DVD Player
-20% Mercata new customer discount
-20% MSN Passport
------------------
$117.35 plus taxes/shipping

What about the Panasonic DVD-RV30? It comes with a $50 mail-in rebate. How does this compare to the Toshiba models?

$232.35
-20% Mercata new customer discount
-20% MSN Passport
----------
$148.70 (+shipping/taxes)
-$50.00 (mail-in rebate)
-----------
~$99.00

I ordered the Panasonic. Both units have gotten good reviews, but I have heard people RAVE about the picture quality on the Panasonic, as well as the dialoge enhancer (boosts center channel) and even the simulated surround is supposed to be awesome. Plus, I read that the remote will work if not directly pointed at the unit (unlike the Toshiba, according to one reviewer).

The Toshiba does offer Zoom, but I can't picture myself needing that "feature"... the black bars don't bother me at all. They both offer component video outputs. Their biggest difference is that the Toshiba ONLY offers coaxial digital audio out and the Panasonic ONLY offers optical digital out. So that should be a consideration unless your receiver has both.

Check out epinions.com and audioreview.com--the reviews for the Panasonic tend to be a little better--plus it ends up being cheaper, so it was a no-brainer in my case.

that sony is a great unit. I have the 330 and love it. It's only for people who don't need decoders though. Otherwise I like the panny at mercata over the tosh...

skywhr - I'm glad you liked my comparison but it's totally true. Buy this Oritron POS DVD Player instead of the Toshiba SD1600 or Panasonic and you'll regret it.

luv2chill - So the Panasonics don't have the problems they had back in 1999? I read quite a few complaints "back in the day" at DVDTalk.com about Panasonic problems.

Now where's that damned laptop at?

nikon - Thanks for the DVD Player review link, very useful when considering a purchase but this 36% off makes it oh so sweet!

VeryCheapGuy - Awesome thread, FW rules!

methinks that is only a vstore rebate... nice try though.

My dad ordered this sh!tty DVD player last week from 800.com and there was no rebate form to speak of. It is majorly cheap. I'm going to tell him to return it and get a real make this time--Toshiba or Panasonic probably.

For those of you who bought a DVD player on the 15th before the las coupon expired:

Call 800.com and ask them to credit you 10% because you bought the day before their current promotion! They seem very willing to be helpful about this... ;)

Urgent--

Hey does anyone actually have this player? (I know a bunch will be getting it next week). But my dad bought one from 800.com a couple of weeks ago, and I went over there today to hook it up for him, and I noticed that when you're at the disc menu (you know, to select play movie, special features, scene access, etc.) it doesn't highlight anything, so you have no idea what you're selecting.

I can't believe that this is just the way the unit operates. Something must be wrong, but I thought I would ask to see if anyone could try it on theirs and see if the highlighting works. Hopefully it does so I can tell 800.com that this is defective and just order a different (i.e. name-brand) model.
