60GXP problems....

Here is what I have been going through:

I just picked up a P4 1.6A with Gigabyte 8SRX. I installed Windows XP last week, and things were working great. Then all of a sudden I was experiencing hangs during either IE loading pages, or trying to access taskbar icons or opening apps. They would eventually open, but sometimes not for a minute or so.

At first I thought it was XP, since some people told me they had problems with XP. So I went back to Windows 2000. I was experiencing the same symptons. I started to get concerned with the HD. So I decided to run Drive Fitness Test for IBM HDs. Well, it would not finish. It would always hang at the "Measuring Read/Write Elements". I started to get more concerned. I wanted to run HD Tach, but it would only run on Windows 98 unless you had a registered version.

So I istalled Windows 98 today. Installed HD Tach, and ran the test. Well, more cause for concern. It gave a "Read or write error, test halted" message.

Here is what I did to try to troubleshoot this problem:

I took the CD-ROM and move it to the Secondary IDE Controller. I tried different Windows OS. I tried another ATA100 IDE cable. I am trying to get my hands on another drive and see if it does the same thing.

So what do you think? Did I get one of those bad 60GXPs? It there anything I can do? Or am I looking at a RMA?

Really appreciate your time, thanks!

If IBM own diag programme won't even run, your choice is fairly clear.

Phone them and ask for an RMA, they should be totally familiar with the process by now!

I'll tell you what I'm experiencing;

I'm running Windows XP Pro with a 60GXP 40gigger. When desktop loads up at start up and I attempt to open Outlook Express or IE, it will take a minute or more to open them. I run the IBM Drive Fitness but it found nothing wrong with the hard drive. I am too wondering if I'm experiencing problems with the hard drive... I wouldn't mind RMA this if possible.

are you OC? if so that could be it! Or you could have screwed the drive up with a high OC over a period of time! All and All you best back it up. I am not accusing you of this just asking it may be a bad a drive as well but these IBM do not do good with high OC!

You know what is so freakishly weird? I had a seagate ataII that did this. You know how I solved it? Moved it to the ATA33 controller (Was on ATA66 before), weird, huh?

As a matter of fact, I am overclocking. I have always used IBM HDs. From the days of the 14GXP, to 34GXP, to 75GXP, and now the 60GXP, I have had at least one drive from each and one of those series. Through each and one of those HDs, I did some overclocking, but probably not as high as with the P4 1.6A.

If IBM drives do not overclock well, which brand does overclock well? Seagate? Maxtor? WD?
