60GB PS3 gone after July

Right now Amazon is tossing in a blu-ray remote and Resident Evil Apocalypse blu-ray disc with the PS3 (plus the 5 movies later by mail) so if I didn't already have a PS3 I'd probably go with the 60GB now instead of 80GB later.

If you do wait, the extra 20GB could be nice if you have a medium sized music collection you'd like to put on the PS3 since that's space for 200+ CDs at 192kbps.

I doubt the general public will even hear about this, I dont see how this will affect the current rise in sales for PS3. Seeing all you guys run in circles like headless chickens is pretty entertaining though.

So you're saying that the current drop in price has nothing to do with the current rise in sales:roll:?

Truth is, people will think this price drop is permanent and be mighty pissed when they find out the price rises permanently next month when the current 60gb stock runs out.

They may be, but that's not guaranteed either.

This thread isnt about the price drop, this thread is about the maybe perhaps possibly certainly or not discontinuation of the 60gb model and with it the 499 sku.

Here's a statement from Dave Karraker

One quick thing before I head to the show for the last day. I just wanted to clarify something. I?ve seen a lot of posts this morning related to the 60GB SKU and the comments by SCEE President David Reeves. As we announced this week, SCEA?s product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of consumers for the foreseeable future.

Personally, I think that there are already so many units out in the stores and that have already been manufactured that it will take a while (till the holidays?) for the 60GB to run out.

So, I've been holding out on buying a 60gb due to price. I'm not debating in my mind whether or not I want one, but it is WHEN I want to buy one. It sounds like I should take advantage of this temporary stock blowout and buy one at $500 while I can.

Do you guys disagree? It seems like 60gb HD will be plenty of space for me as I'll typically only use it for Madden and similar games and won't really use it AT THIS TIME for movie watching as I have a different setup for that.

Thoughts?

> "Thoughts?"

Some time next year the price of the 80GB model will probably drop below $500, but I doubt it will be before next Summer or even Fall.

So, do you want:
a. a 60GB with EE and free bonus items for $500 now
b. an 80GB with no EE and probably no extras for $500 by xmas
c. an 80GB with no EE for under $500 some time next year

I can tell you that the 20gb HD for Xbox360 (which is actually 13gb of free space after the partitions) is more than enough unless you are one that downloads movies and crap. I always have atleast 11gb free or so on my 360.

If you are buying a console solely for Madden I really don't see why you would want a PS3, especially considering the 2008 version of madden runs at 60fps on Xbox360 and 30fps on PS3.

Actually, wasn't it posted that Madden will run at 60 FPS on both systems and that NCAA will only be 30 on the PS3?

It depends. I too typically have 11 GB or so free most of the time, but if you're the type of person that downloads map packs and such, I can see where it might get used up. That last free map pack for Rainbow Six Vegas was around 700 MB IIRC. Too many of those and your 13 GB will be gone. Now with the PS3, space is indeed less of a concern... for now anyway.

Personally, I think that once the 60 GB stock is gone they'll start offering the 80 GB version unbundled (w/o Motorstorm) for $499. So I don't think there is any need to "grab them while that last" so to speak. I could be wrong, but I think that is what will happen.

The PS3 and 360 definitely differ in that regard. I'm under 30 GB right now on my 60 GB (granted I do have quite a few videos). There's no cap on the download games, so almost all the ones I have are at least 100 MB each. Warhawk was almost 800 MB! If you look at the demos, several of those are close to or over the 1 GB mark. Plus, you can cache games to the harddrive--Oblivion takes up 4 GB.

It may not be much now, but as more games come out, those things will start to add up.

It's not completely for madden, also GTA4 and the bigger styles of games that are more enjoyable on console instead of PC. Also, they did announce that Madden 08 will be 60 fps now. Thanks for the advice though.

I have $500 in gift cards to Best Buy so I think I'll grab one up.

Does your ISP give you problems for downloading so much?

No. Though I do notice throttling when I use Bittorrent 😱

Wow, what a bunch of retards. Did they not notice the huge increase in sales after the price cut? Now that they're nearing releases people might actually buy they're thinking 'why should we lose out on that extra buck, how can we find a way to charge people for it again?'

Their job is to get as many units into peoples hands as possible, it's up to the developers to make their money for them. That's why consoles are sold at a loss to begin with, they know this, so wtf are they thinking?

The price is what's driving customers away, an extra 20gb and a bundled launch title that isn't very interesting to begin with is not gonna make up for that. These new units are just gonna sit on store shelves collecting dust like the last ones.

One step forward, two steps back, Sony fails miserably at marketing.

Yah believe a forum post from maddenwars.com or an article written from 1up.com ... it's up to you.

Wait, they removed the EE and killed the backwards compatibility? Well, fuck that noise. I'll just buy another PS2. Congrats, Sony. You lose, again.

No, they switched to software emulation for the 80GB just like it's been for PAL units all along. Sony owns the IP for the PS2 so it works better than xbox -- no per-game profiles needed.

The $499 60GB still has EE which is still enabled.

But go ahead and buy a PS2 if you want the best possible PS2 compatibility and don't care about
- using the HD for virtual memory cards
- upscaling to 720p / 1080i & p
- PS3 games
- blu-ray
