60gb PS3 finally bites the dust

Well I guess my PS3 is in Sony heaven right now. After two faithful years of entertainment, she's finally gone. Yesterday, I started her up to play GT5P with my brand new G25 wheel and all I get it three beeps and a flashing red light. I've tried everything, from using a different outlet/power strip to unplugging it to switching the power switch on and off. I tried today to see if it somehow fixed itself, but no - it's still dead as a doorknob.

I guess I gotta call Sony and get a box sent to my house to ship it in. I don't know what they're going to do about the game still stuck inside the drive. I have a bunch of shit on the HDD, is it possible to take the drive out and hook it up to my comp?

Has this ever happened to anyone else here? It sucks, I got RB2, the new Tomb Raider, G25 racing wheel, COD:WAW and a new dualshock.

🙁 This sucks.

Sucks to hear that. I don't have much knowledge on PS3s but from what I've heard: you probably had a better shot at a long lasting console with Sony than with Microsoft any day. I believe there is a way to remove the hard drive (they are standard 2.5 inch laptop drives if I remember correctly) but whether the file system is something your computer can recognize is beyond me. There's probably a tool out there somewhere to do it.

Are you gonna sell the G25 wheel? How's the condition? If there are no damage or stains on it, I'll give you $50 for it.

I tried putting the ps3 HDD into my computer, but I couldn't get Windows to recognize it. 🙁

The PS3 has a special file format.

I believe the PS3 has its own backup utility though. Not sure on exactly what it backs up, maybe if you're lucky, you can get an exact clone of your disk. Your best bet would be to get a friend with a PS3 he'll allow you to tinker with. Replace his hard drive with yours. Attach an external HD through USB and begin the backing up process.

...Not sure on this, someone correct me if I'm mistaken.

Worst case scenario, you can contact Sony, give them your RMA and request that your drive's contents not be touched, or transferred over to your replacement unit.
