600W Modular 80+ PSU?

My build will be something like a Q9450 / HD4850 / 2Gb-DDR2-1066 / 2 HDDs / 4 fans. Hope to overclock 3.0-3.2 Ghz.

I figure I need 600W to be safe.

I would like: modular cables, 80+ efficiency, and pretty quiet.

What kind of price should I expect to pay for what I'm looking for? (CA $$). The Corsair 620HX is around $140-$160.

Any recommendations from good name brands? (without being too expensive)

Modular interface adds some cost...so a decent modular 600W is going to be at least $115 plus...if not $130 plus.

Here is the lowest priced (canadian) 600W Modular that I would recommend...I don't think the way they list its 12V rail breakdown is correct, because Silverstone's webstie has it listed with dual 12V rails capable of 32A and 48A combined, you may want to e-mail NCIX about it, because the rails as they have them listed are kind of wonky.

500 would power your system, but room to grow is also good. I just replaced my trusty Antec Earthwatts with the modular Corsair 620HX and absolutely love it. Quieter, better airflow, and the current is more steady. A $30 rebate brought it to USD$120.

There is also a 520 watt version for ~30 dollars less. If you'd rather save a few bucks, and modular doesn't appeal that much, look for their 550-watt model. Look around for rebates; Corsair runs them almost constantly on their RAM and PSUs.

 
After using the first ever modular PSU ever made I said I'll never get a non modular PSU again... I returned it for a refund (turned out it was my video card that was faulty, not my PSU, so I did not need it) and never bought a modular PSU since... they always cost too much more then the non modular versions, way too much. And tend to have lower efficiency rating (Although now with making only the V5 and V3 modular and leaving the V12 mobo connection as a non modular that has been largely resolved)...

I hope you find a good modular for your needs. But do at least LOOK at non modulars as well before you make the final decision.
 
600W for that system is, well, I mean, how did you figure such a ridiculous number? The system will draw less than 300W at full load. If the Cooler Master Silent Pros are really as silent as the AT review said, they might be worth looking at as they're not ruined with price either.
 
I used this web tool to calculate how many what's I would need to overclock to 3.2 Ghz PSU Watts calculator

Though Since the Q9450 isn't in the list I used the Q6600, and I didn't know the overclocked voltage so I put it at 1.50 Volts (though I know that's too high)

Estimated Power Draw = 429 Watts recommending 515 Watts


I did it again with a Q9300 instead and put the O.C. volt to 1.40 :

Estimated Power Draw = 375 Watts recommending 451 Watts

So I should go with the Corsair 520HX instead of the 620HX?


But If I wanted to try and O.C. further to ~3.4 -3.6Ghz (unlikely) and wanted to do cross fire I would definitely need the 620HX right?

No, even overclocked your q9450 isn't going to pull more then 150w, I doubt it'll even draw over 100w. Same for the videocard. Most other stuff is negligable, you could say all the other stuff draws 50-75w. So even if both videocard and gpu pull 150w each ( inpossible ) you'd be at 300+75w = 375w. Perfectly fine for a 520hx.

1.4 volts will fry these CPUs, never mind 1.5. You can use the option for the QX9650 to immitate your chip; the highest I can convince this very same calculator to display for your system is ~280 watts. No clue how you got 400+ in there...

High quality 450W PSUs will power your system. If you anticipate adding a 2nd Radeon 4850, the 520W will still serve you just fine.
