I would strongly avoid against buying a Katana..... A YZF600 (Not R6) would be a good choice if you have to get a 600, as would an SV650 as suggested earlier.

You might want to pick up something small and cheap and learn with it for the rest of the year as riding season is almost over already, and save your money all winter to get a sweet bike in spring when you have some experience.

Good Guy, I really doubt your GS500 can keep up with R6's unless you ride with some really really crappy riders.

FYI - I started on a '95 YZF600, rode that for 4 years and 14,000 miles, and got a TL1000R this spring....orgasmic.

Dude, thanks for that input.

What makes a "real" motorcycle?

How could those motorcycles be the best??

Are they the fastest? NO

Are they the best handling? NO

Do they have the best engine size to power ratio? NO

Do they have the best track performance? NO

Are they the lightest? NO

Do they even have enough power to do a measly wheelie? NO

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Saying those are "real" motorcycles is like saying that dump trucks are better than race cars.

You're on crack, and your ignorant patriotic redneck opinions are horribly innacurate.

Oriental motorcycle = turd on two wheels.

Troll.

you are all morons, 500cc isnt too big to start on, start on a busa for your first bike if you want as long as you arent a dumbass, and dont waste your time/money taking MSF course unless you need to to get your license like in california if your under 21, they teach you common sense bullshit that you'll learn yourself

Skoorb Effect? Right guys? RIGHT?!??! I hope people don't exist like this in real life.

Still in the process of looking at 600s and the SV650. The SV650 only has 15 more HP than the Ninja 500R...

I took a saftey class and then started riding an YamahaXS 1100. Its a big bike, but I am a big guy.

Don't buy until after you take a safety class. You will learn a lot that might impact your decision.

Harley Davidsons are total crap, most unrelaible POS on the planet its just a oil leak with two wheels and no power to boot, get a honda, or if you really want an "American made" bullshit bike get a Buell or something.

SV650S is good bike but lacking in power because of its V-twin engine, it'll give you less HP than an I-4 engine of similar displacment but same or more rear wheel torque, also has shitty suspension that needs to be changed out to aftermarket part but other than that its a good bike and handles like crazy on the twisties, only get it if you aren't concerned about power that much, and katanas are crap stay away from them, buy a busa and stfu
and MSF is crap dont waste your time, and those that think im a squid i wear full leathers and ride a CBR 929 so suck on that

;):p

actually, my friend told me that in Korea, they have Hyundais that rival Lexus, MB, and BMW ;) They have huge luxury cars that have built-in refrigerators and stuff :p Why don't we see these in the states? Because there's no market for them. Who would buy a Hyundai over a Benz, BMW, or a Lexus? I'll try to find a link later.

Me so sowwy! Me so sowwy! Fohgiveness preeze!!!

Well, if you like to ride a glorified plastic moped, with your ass in the air above your head, I guess that's your prerogative. Maybe you can get a big tatoo on your chest that says "DongSuk Motors" to impress all the chicks.

Cheers.

You have won a couple of weeks elsewhere. Maybe you will be sorry enough not to post racist crap like this when you return. If you post anything like this again, we can arrange a longer tour of other forums.

Cheers.

I think that was one of the most disrespectful comments I've ever seen here on ATOT. Normally I'm tolerant of bashing other people and stuff but you've crossed the racial barrier and that's... I can't even think of the word to express what I feel. As for your other comment about about oriental bikes being turds on wheels, I realize that everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but don't go around threadcrapping when you know your comments will make you unwelcome. Get a life, buddy.

Nicely said. I thought of saying something like that, but figured two wrongs don't make a right :) Plus I didn't want to stoop to his level with the insults, but that's just me :p

I saw this once on a T-shirt at the Daytona 200.

"If Harley built an airplane, would you fly in it?"

Classic.

~AJ

It's almost like Harley riders have a complex over their bikes...

Elemental, if you're dead set on picking up a 600cc, there isn't much we can do to talk you out of it. I think, however, you're underestimating the power of most 600cc class superbikes. They'll do wheelies on power alone through first and second gear and even third with a bit of work. While that sounds like fun, that kind of power is not for newbies to learn on. Hit the throttle to hard around an apex, and you'll find yourself in the ditch.

I purchased a Ninja EX500 last february for under $3500 out the door. I've put over a thousand miles on it so far, and have had a blast doing it.
1) It's fast (enough).
(a) 0-60mph in under 4 seconds
(b) 1/4mi times in the low-mid 13's.
(c) satisfaction of knowing you can dust 95% of the cars on the road

2) It's safe.
(a) weighs 20-40lbs more than most 600 class superbikes, so its fairly stable (not to imply that .6L bikes aren't...)
(b) plenty of power to avoid collisions and pass cars on the interstate.
(c) won't kill yourself trying to do wheelies/stoppies (can't do neither on my bike.:frown: )

3) It's cheap!
(a) I paid $3400 out the door for my bike, and it had only 6000miles on it.
(b) When I sell it next year to get a bigger bike, I'll probably get $2500-3000 back.

In California, the state subsidizes some of the cost if you're under 21- I think I paid around $75 or $80 for it. If you're over 21, the cost more than doubled... I think it was around 180 or so? Can someone verify this?

I haven't read everything but I found a link to Team Oregon MSF courses for Portland, Oregon residents.

I'm wondering if I need my own bike or do they have bikes I can use and how much the course costs?

I'll probably have a look at their .pdf file tonight which may answer these 2 questions.

for the beginner class they provide the bike and they have limited helmets on hand but a good "head cover" or scarf around your head would be needed just in case.

Otherwise bring water, a bit of snacks, ankle covered boots, full sleeve t-shirt and gloves (full leather or summer riding gloves).
